Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
Moose Jaw Warriors goalie Zach Sawchenko has been named to Canada's National Men's Under-18 team for the 2015 IIHF Under-18 World Championships. As well, forward Brett Howden is one of six under-age players selected to the pre-competition camp roster.
Sawchenko completed his second season with the Warriors, in 49 appearances he posted a 21-22-2 record with a 3.32gaa and .896sv% and had four shutouts. The Calgary product was a second round pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, in 75 career WHL appearances he has a record of 30-35-2-1 with a 3.42gaa and .893sv%.
Sawchenko is no stranger to international competition. He won a silver medal with Team Pacific at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, posting a .929sv% and 2.40gaa. At last summer's 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament, Sawchenko led Canada to a gold medal, posting a .910sv% and 2.25gaa.
Howden was the fifth overall pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft, this year he had 22 goals and 46 points and was fifth in WHL rookie scoring.
This will mark the second time that Howden will put on a team Canada jersey. At the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge he had two goals and three points in five games for Team White. Howden, and the five other under-age players, will travel to Switzerland and play in pre-tournament games to get added experience playing international competition before returning home prior to the start of the world championship.
The duo is joining Warriors Head Coach Tim Hunter who has been named Canada's Head Coach for the upcoming Under-18 World Championships.
The players selected, born in 1997, were selected by Ryan Jankowski, Hockey Canada's Director of Player Personnel, with support from Tim Hunter and Assistant Coaches Ian Herbers and Louis Robitaille.
Canada has pre-competition games April 13th (Slovakia) and April 14th (Germany), they open the 2015 IIHF Under-18 World Championships in Switzerland April 16th against Latvia. The preliminary round continues April 18th against Switzerland, the 19th against the Czech Republic, the close against Finland on April 21st.
