Warriors Gain Confidence Heading into Three-Game Homestand
November 9, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
A road trip to Alberta was just what the doctor ordered for the Moose Jaw Warriors.
The Warriors travelled to Lethbridge and Medicine Hat last weekend and came away with four points and a boat load of confidence heading into three home games this week.
"It was good for the team to get those four points, the boys are getting on a roll here and hopefully keep it going against Red Deer," Warriors forward Jagger Firkus said.
Firkus led the charge for the Warriors in their two wins in Alberta, scoring his first career WHL hat trick and posting four goals in the two games.
"It was a great feeling obviously, but I was just happy to make sure the boys got the win that night," Firkus said.
Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary said the team showed a lot of resilience in the two road wins.
"That was led from our big guys, up front and on the back end," he said. "[Denton] Mateychuk and [Daemon] Hunt were next level on the back end, they played an awful lot in the third period and they led the way and then up front, I thought, Ryder Korczak had one of his better games and not just with the puck but without it as well."
After getting a day off on Sunday, the Warriors tried something new at practice on Monday with music playing through the sound system at Mosaic Place throughout the session.
"Coming off a road trip and a day off, it can be a little sleepy for practice, so we thought we would try something different and get the energy level up," O'Leary said. "It was all about execution and energy today and the music definitely helped."
The Warriors will try to keep the momentum going into Tuesday when they welcome in another Alberta team as the Red Deer Rebels come to Mosaic Place.
"Confidence is huge for the whole team's game," Firkus said. "We'll go in there against Red Deer, make sure we're confident and we play our game."
The Rebels enter Tuesday's game with the second-best record in the Central Division, only one point behind Edmonton, who will be in Moose Jaw on Saturday.
O'Leary said the Warriors are going to need to bring their work ethic to come away with another win.
"They're real hard on pucks, they're going to be hard in front of both nets and we'll need to be ready," he said. "We expect a really good matchup here, but we know it's going to be hard and heavy."
The Warriors and Rebels face-off at 7 p.m. at Mosaic Place.
