Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Saskatoon, SK - The Edmonton Oil Kings (9-3-2-1) coughed up a late third period lead on Tuesday night as they kicked off their four-game road trip with a 4-3 loss in overtime to the Saskatoon Blades (10-4-1-0).

The Oil Kings and Blades, who hadn't met in the regular season in 654 days, used the opening 20 minutes to feel one another out. When the horn sounded to end the opening stanza, the teams were in a scoreless deadlock with Saskatoon outshooting Edmonton 8-5.

In the second period, the Oil Kings found their legs and dominated the middle 20 minutes, outshooting the Blades 17-5 and hitting the scoresheet twice. Josh Williams opened the scoring with his team leading seventh of the campaign at the 10:54 mark. Jalen Luypen created a turnover in the neutral zone, sped into the Blades zone down the left-wall, swung a pass in front to Williams, who was able to re-adjust to take the pass and slide it underneath the pads of Nolan Maier.

The Oil Kings extended their lead just 1:53 later on a power play as Dylan Guenther matched Williams with his seventh tally of the year. With the man-advantage and some extra room to operate, Guenther grabbed the puck in the right-wing circle and from the faceoff dot lasered a wicked wrist shot top shelf on Maier to give the visitors a 2-0 lead going into the second intermission.

The Blades grabbed some early third period momentum thanks to a shorthanded goal just 2:34 into the third by Jayden Wiens after he stripped a puck in the Edmonton zone, sped to the net and swept the puck past Sebastian Cossa. The Oil Kings answered back just over four minutes later after Williams sprung Brendan Kuny and Jakub Demek on a two-on-one rush with Demek firing home his fifth goal in his last four games to restore the two-goal lead.

The Oil Kings looked to be home free as the game entered the late stages, but another turnover in their own zone would end up in the back of their net after Tristan Robbins spotted Brandon Lisowsky wide-open for a backdoor tap in with 5:12 left in regulation time. Then, just 52 seconds later, the game was tied and again it was Lisowsky finding the back of the net, this time ripping home a wrist shot off the far post from the left-wing circle.

In overtime, Robbins would seal the Oil Kings fate as he broke in on an odd-man rush with Aidan De La Gorgendiere, took the cross-ice pass and stuffed home the winner, less than a minute into the bonus period.

Cossa finished the night making 20 saves, while Maier kicked out 29 Edmonton shots. The Oil Kings went 1-for-4 on the power play, the Blades did not receive a power play opportunity in the game.

Next up, the Oil Kings continue their four-game Saskatchewan trek with a stop in Prince Albert to battle the Raiders tomorrow evening at 6:00 P.M. You can catch all the action at oilkings.ca/radio.
