Warriors Fresh Heading into Two Home Games this Weekend

Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Moose Jaw, SK - The Moose Jaw Warriors put together a great run through the month of January.

Moose Jaw finished 8-2-0-0 during the first month of 2024 and they look to build off that now as the calendar turns to February.

"Guys are feeling more comfortable with each other, linemates are finding chemistry, guys are gelling really nicely on the ice and the group's having a lot of fun," Warriors forward Brayden Schuurman said.

The Warriors head into a tough weekend on home ice as they prepare to host the Prince Albert Raiders and Red Deer Rebels this weekend.

Moose Jaw is coming off a split of last weekend's home-and-home set with the Medicine Hat Tigers, which saw the Warriors win 6-5 in a shootout at home and fall 5-3 in Medicine Hat.

Head coach Mark O'Leary said the Warriors put together two strong outings despite the split.

"We want the result back [on Saturday] but we still played pretty well, gave up 19 shots, of those 19, not a whole lot were from inside, so we did a pretty good job defensively," he said. "The difference was, we were a little bit slow with our second guy in the offensive zone, so we didn't have as much zone time and as many opportunities to score goals."

Despite ending the month on a loss, the Warriors have won 11 of their last 13 games and led the Western Hockey League in a number of categories during the month of January, including fewest shots allowed (294), most power play goals (19), best power play percentage (44.2%) and fewest power play goals allowed (6).

Schuurman said the Warriors are showing their potential as a team right now.

"We've got a pretty confident group coming into practice every day and working, we know what we have to work on and improve those things in order to get the job done," he said.

"For us, it's just about continuing to play fast, continuing to play our game and holding onto pucks in the offensive zone, that's a big key for us."

Prince Albert is coming off a 4-3 win over Red Deer on Wednesday night and has also beaten the top ranked Saskatoon Blades last weekend.

O'Leary said the Raiders are always a test.

"You watch their last few games with Saskatoon and Red Deer, they're hard games, you talk about the importance of each phase and each area, they're going to make you pay attention to detail," he said.

"They're close, tight checking games and we'll need to be ready."

The Warriors and Raiders meet at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Moose Jaw Events Centre. Moose Jaw will then welcome in Red Deer on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
