Warriors Fall Short in Brandon on Friday
November 19, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
A two-goal second period for the Brandon Wheat Kings lifted them past the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday night at Westoba Place.
"That's kind of been the story for the last little bit, a second period that wasn't even close to good enough," Warriors assistant coach Scott King said after the game.
"The third period, we pushed, I loved the zone time, had some looks and just couldn't get one to go there at the end."
Braden Miller and Daemon Hunt scored in the loss for Moose Jaw, while goalie Jackson Unger made 22 saves in his first career WHL start.
King said Unger put together a strong showing in his debut.
"He's going to be a real good one," he said. "Very composed, nothing rattles him, so very happy with him."
Miller scored his first of the season to open the scoring for the Warriors just 2:13 into the game.
Moose Jaw held the lead until under five minutes left in the opening frame when Vincent Iorio scored for the Wheat Kings.
Brandon controlled much of the second period, outshooting Moose Jaw 12-3.
The Wheat Kings took the lead with an unassisted goal from Ridly Greig midway through the frame.
Marcus Kallionkieli put Brandon up by two with 4:04 left in the second.
The Warriors responded strong in the third period and a blast from the point by Hunt cut the lead down to one with 6:47 gone in the period. It was Hunt's fifth of the season.
Moose Jaw continued to pressure Brandon, but Riley Ginnell put the game away with an empty net goal with 14 seconds left in the game.
King said turnovers hurt the Warriors in the loss.
"We shortened the ice and we didn't get pucks deep, we turned pucks over at our line, at their line," he said. "We made the game a lot harder than it has to be."
The Wheat Kings outshot the Warriors, 26-23, in the game.
Moose Jaw was 0-for-2 on the power play and Brandon went 1-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The Warriors are back on the ice coming up on Saturday night when they host the Regina Pats for Hockey Fights Cancer night at Mosaic Place.
Tickets are available at mjwarriors.ca and the Mosaic Place Box Office.
All the action is live on Country 100 at 7 p.m., starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:40 p.m.
The IKS Media Warriors Live broadcast kicks off on WHL Live with the Mosaic Pre-Game Show at 6:50 p.m.
