Warriors Extend Winning Streak to Seven Games in Swift Current
February 4, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
The Moose Jaw Warriors went into a building where it hadn't won yet this season and came away with its seventh straight victory on Friday night.
Eric Alarie scored a pair of goals to help lead the Warriors to a 3-1 win over the Swift Current Broncos at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.
"It feels amazing," Alarie said after the win. "I know at the start of the year, we weren't able to have a winning streak going, but we know we could get one at anytime, so now we're in one and let's keep it going."
The Broncos came into the game hungry and pressured the Warriors throughout the game, but Assistant coach Scott King said the team found a way to pull out the win.
"It was a tight game, Swift played real hard, they're physical, they played a simple game and they made it tough on us, but at the end of the day, our skill shone through," he said.
Atley Calvert added a goal and two points in the win for Moose Jaw.
Alarie said everyone contributed to the Warriors coming away with two points.
"We never give up, we keep playing our game and that's how ew come back and win games," he said.
Alarie's two goals snapped a eight-game goalless drought and King said when the 18-year-old gets rolling, he's a big piece of the Warriors' attack.
"He's a guy that if we can get him scoring, it's just another threat that we have, so this will help him out," King said. "Those were two goal-scorers goals, shooting the puck quick and find the top corner, so good for him."
Both teams came out of the gate firing during a back-and-forth opening frame.
It was the Broncos that would strike first when Josh Filmon finished on a one-timer in front of the Warriors net with just 1:25 left in the first period.
After withstanding the pressure from the Broncos in the first period, the Warriors pushed back in the second period.
Calvert continued his goal-scoring tear with his sixth goal in the past four games, wiring a shot over Broncos goalie Isaac Poulter's shoulder just 2:56 into the second period.
The Warriors took the lead with 6:27 left in the middle frame when Alarie blasted home a rebound on the power play for his 11th of the season.
Alarie sealed the win for the Warriors just 4:08 into the third period, taking a great feed from Robert Baco on a two-on-one and lifting it over Poulter for his second of the night.
Swift Current applied pressure late in the game, but hit two posts and Carl Tetachuk turned away all 10 shots he faced in the period to secure his 20th win of the season.
Tetachuk made 26 total saves in the victory, as the Warriors outshot the Broncos 28-27 on the night.
Moose Jaw went 1-for-3 on the power play while also putting together a 4-for-4 night on the penalty kill.
King said the Warriors need to keep their foot on the gas going into Medicine Hat on Saturday night.
"It's a good feeling right now and I don't think we're going to take it for granted," he said.
The Warriors continue their two-game weekend road trip on Saturday in Medicine Hat against the Tigers at Co-op Place. Puck drops at 8 p.m. Saskatchewan time.
Tune into all the action with Voice of the Warriors James Gallo on Country 100, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 7:40 p.m.
