WHL Moose Jaw Warriors

Warriors Aim to Keep Momentum Rolling in Swift Current

February 4, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

The Moose Jaw Warriors finished last week on the biggest high of their season.

The team knocked off the WHL's top-two teams and beat their biggest rivals to extend their season-high winning streak to six games.

"It's an unreal mood, the guys are clicking, so it's nice to get together and see each other every day," Warriors forward Riley Niven said.

The Warriors will now look to keep the momentum on their side as they head out onto the road for games in Swift Current and Medicine Hat this weekend.

Niven said the Warriors need to continue playing with confidence.

"We're starting to work together and realize that we're a great team in this league," he said. "Our confidence is real high and we're happy with that."

Moose Jaw has been building that confidence throughout the season. Warriors forward Atley Calvert says as the team has gotten closer, they've seen their success grow.

"The guys are really close in there, they're really tight and as we've gotten tighter, we grew in our structure and we're really improving our game here," he said.

The Warriors open their two-game road trip in Swift Current on Friday night. Moose Jaw is expecting a tough test from the Broncos.

"They work hard, they chip pucks in, they get to the dirty area, so if we just shut everyone down there, work hard in the grittier areas, win more battles and then we will win," Niven said.

Moose Jaw is 2-1-1-0 against Swift Current this season, but has lost both games at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.

Calvert said the Broncos always play better on home ice and the Warriors need to be ready.

"Their fans are loud, they feel right on top of it because the rink is so small, they have good fans and they play hard in their run, so we're going to have to be good tonight," he said.

Slowing down the Broncos in transition will be key to the Warriors' success, added Niven.

"Just stick to our system," he said. "We've been able to shut down most teams in the neutral zone, so just stick to our system and hopefully that works out well."

The Warriors and Broncos face-off at 7 p.m. on Friday night and then Moose Jaw travels in Medicine Hat on Saturday at 8 p.m.

Tune into both games on Country 100, starting with the Pre-Game at 6:40 p.m. on Friday and 7:40 p.m. on Saturday.
