BOISE, Idaho - The Santa Cruz Warriors dropped the Idaho Stampede 111-110 Wednesday night in front of a national television audience on CBS Sports Network, securing the 5-2 advantage on the season series against their West Division rival.
The Warriors were led by Cameron Jones, who scored 25 points - his sixth game in the last seven with at least 20 points. Seth Curry recorded his third double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 assists, while Golden State Warriors assignee Nemanja Nedovic scored 16. Ognjen Kuzmic, also on assignment from the Golden State Warriors, grabbed 17 boards, while Daniel Nwaelele scored 14 points and had a game-high three steals.
Idaho was paced by Kevin Murphy, who led all scorers with 31 points off the bench. Allen Crabbe, currently on assignment from the Portland Trail Blazers, scored 16 points, while Derrick Caracter logged a double-double with 13 points and a team-high 15 boards.
The Stampede raced out to an eight point lead in the first quarter, but Ognjen Kuzmic grabbed a defensive rebound and scored a layup to put Santa Cruz ahead for the first time with 3:48 left in the first. Santa Cruz extended its lead to seven in the period, eventually leading by as much as 18 in the second quarter. The Warriors maintained their double-digit lead into the final frame until Idaho went on a 14-3 run to cut the deficit to two with 4:44 left in the game. Santa Cruz responded with a 6-2 run of its own, and while Idaho pulled within two three times in the final minute, the Warriors converted free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Santa Cruz held the edge on field goal shooting (51.2%-39.8%), assists (21-18) and blocks (7-3). Idaho had more rebounds (55-47) and points in the paint (44-42).
The Santa Cruz Warriors return home to face the Iowa Energy for the first game of a back-to-back at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
