
Byars, Diogu Propel Jam Past Toros

BAKERSFIELD, March 12, 2014 - Derrick Byars (26 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) and Ike Diogu (26 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists) led the Bakersfield Jam (15-24) to a 117-106 victory on Wednesday night over the visiting Austin Toros (16-25).
In the first quarter, Bakersfield built up a quick 7-0 lead and stretched it out to as many as 11 points. The Jam entered the second period with a 35-30 lead, but that lead was erased as the Toros went on a 13-6 run and captured a 43-41 advantage at the 6:09 mark. Austin kept momentum on their side and went into the half up 57-53.
Third quarter was the main difference in the game as the Jam shot 59 percent from the floor, compared to just 26 percent for Austin, and outscored the Toros 34-18. In the final frame, Bakersfield continued their high energy and efficiency on the court as they had their lead increase to as many as 18 points.
The Jam shot better from the field (49.4%-40.2%) and held the edge in rebounds (49-46), assists (31-22), points in the paint (48-36) and fast break points (11-5), while Austin had more blocks (8-4) and second chance points (21-12).
Jerel McNeal posted 19 points, eight assists and five rebounds while Dennis Horner tallied 15 points and eight rebounds. Terrel Harris contributed 11 points and four assists.
The Toros were led by Ronald Murray who had a game-high 35 points. Courtney Fells added a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Greg Gantt also scored 17 points.
Bakersfield will next travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma for a match against the 66ers on Sunday, March 16.
