Warriors Bringing Positive Momentum into Two Weekend Games

January 28, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

The Moose Jaw Warriors are returning to home ice with loads of confidence after sweeping their three games in Alberta earlier this week.

"It feels great, it was a really happy bus ride home and I'm really proud of the guys, we're playing really good hockey right now," Warriors captain Daemon Hunt said.

The Warriors have won four straight games coming out of the road trip as they prepare to face-off with the Winnipeg ICE and Regina Pats on home ice this weekend.

Head coach Mark O'Leary said the Warriors played with effort and compete in all three games on the road trip and they need to bring that back to Mosaic Place now.

"We got better as the road trip went on," he said. "There was nine really good period in terms of the effort and compete and if we can bring that on a consistent basis, we're going to have a chance to win every night."

The Warriors have been tight knit group all season, but the success on the most recent road trip has pulled the team closer together.

"The boys really bonded together on this roady and we got the job done in all three games," Warriors forward Atley Calvert said.

"It's fun when all the guys come together and you're playing good hockey. It's fun to come to the rink every day."

Hunt echoed that sentiment.

"The group's coming together," he said. "The addition of Cordel Larson has been great for us, he's been doing a great job and we're just playing really hard hockey and we're executing and we're just happy that we're playing hockey."

Now the Warriors are going to need to channel those positive vibes into two tough tests this weekend when they host Winnipeg and Regina in downtown Moose Jaw.

The Warriors have struggled against the WHL-leading ICE, going 0-3 so far this season.

Moose Jaw is also 2-4-1-0 against the Pats during their season series.

"Winnipeg is fast and super skilled, we're going to have to keep with our structure and Regina, they work and we just have to all work," Calvert said.

"It starts with being above, so make sure when they want to generate things off the rush and in their transition that they're coming through at least three guys," added O'Leary.

"We don't need to emulate anybody else's game, it's about us and what we do to be successful and we just have to find that early."

The Warriors and ICE face-off at 7 p.m. on Friday night and then the Regina Pats come to town for Hockey Day in Canada on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Mosaic Place.
