New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - P.J. Walters and Taylor Rogers put up quite the pitchers' duel in New Britain, Conn., on Saturday night, but it was Rogers who got the better of it as the Rock Cats beat the Fisher Cats, 3-1. The victory evened the series at one win each with two games to go in the series and the season.
Neither pitcher allowed much over the first few innings of the game. Andy Burns singled off Rogers in the first, but New Britain's lefty proceeded to retired the next 15 hitters in a row. Walters allowed a first-inning double, but worked around that hit to keep the game scoreless.
In the fourth, New Britain (71-69) picked up its first run against Walters (L; 2-3). Nate Hanson led off with a double to left, and then scored on a single to center field by Mike Gonzales for a 1-0 lead. A home run by Eddie Rosario in the sixth put New Britain on top, 2-0.
The Fisher Cats didn't get their second base runner until the sixth when Gustavo Pierre reached on an error. He was stranded second when Burns flied to center.
After a 1-2-3 seventh, the Fisher Cats (66-74) got on the board. Melky Mesa and Michael Crouse singled to put runners at the corners. With one out, Gustavo Pierre lofted a sac fly to center to cut the deficit in half, 2-1, but Crouse was stranded at third to end the threat.
New Britain got its final run against Wlaters with consecutive doubles in the bottom of the eighth. He left the game at that point, giving up three runs over 7.1 innings. He struck out seven and didn't walk a batter in his eighth and final start for New Hampshire this season.
Rogers (W; 11-6) worked eight for New Britain, allowing just the single run on three hits. He improved to 3-0 with a 0.84 ERA since the All-Star Break.
With the series now tied at one win each, the teams play game three on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. Righty Ben White (1-0, 4.26) will make his second New Hampshire start. He'll be opposed by New Britain righty Jose Berrios (3-4, 3.54). First pitch is at 1:35 p.m. Radio coverage begins with Tom Gauthier at 1:15 p.m. on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
