New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats by the score of 3-1 on Saturday evening at New Britain Stadium.
Cats' starter LHP Taylor Rogers, who was honored with the team's Pitcher of the Year award before the 7:05 contest, cruised through eight innings en route to his eleventh win of the season (11-6). The southpaw allowed just three hits on the night, retiring 20 straight Fisher Cats batters at one point, while striking out nine. RHP Dan Turpen came on for the ninth inning and earned his third save in the process.
Both sides swapped scoreless frames until the home club went up 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth. 3B Nate Hanson led off the inning with a double off of former Minnesota Twin RHP P.J. Walters and then was pushed across the plate on a base hit from 1B Mike Gonzales.
The Rock Cats went up 2-0 in the sixth on a leadoff home run from CF Eddie Rosario, his seventh of the season.
New Hampshire got on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from 3B Gustavo Pierre, scoring CF Melky Mesa, who led off the frame with a single out to left-center field.
New Britain tacked on a much needed insurance run on the bottom half of the inning, seeing Rosario and Hanson crack back-to-back doubles to give the Rock Cats a 3-1 lead.
Walters falls to 2-3 on the year after working seven and one-third innings. The ex-Major Leaguer allowed three runs, all earned, on seven hits while walking none and striking out seven.
Additional Rock Cats receiving awards before the game were Tony Thomas, who was honored with both the Community Service award and 10th Player of the Year, and Reynaldo Rodriguez who captured the MVP award in his second year with the Cats'.
The Rock Cats play the third game of their final homestand on Sunday afternoon with a 1:35 p.m. scheduled first pitch. RHP Jose Berrios gets the start for New Britain and he will go up against Fisher Cats starter RHP Ben White. The season finale will be played 1:35 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
