Reading Fightin Phils News Release
The Fightin Phils (64-76) are on a roll as they have now won five games in a row as they beat the Trenton Thunder (67-73) 7-1 on Saturday night. Gonzalez was strong in his final outing of the 2014 season.
Severino Gonzalez retired Gary Bird to begin the bottom of the 2nd inning but then gave up a double to Rob Segedin. Segedin moved over to third base on a groundout by Dan Fiorito then scored on a wild pitch by Gonzalez that would give Trenton a 1-0 lead. Reading finally got to Daniel Camarena in the top of the 6th inning as Jake Fox hit a one-out single to tie the game at 1-1 as he scored Peter Lavin who doubled in the previous at-bat.
Severino Gonzalez turned in a strong outing to finish his 2014 campaign as he allowed just one run off three hits and one walk in six innings pitched. He recorded three strikeouts. Mike Nesseth entered the game in relief in the bottom of the 7th inning. Nesseth (2-5) tossed two scoreless innings in relief to earn his second win of the season.
Carlos Alonso led off with a single in the top of the 8th inning off reliever Jacob Lindgren then was moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Peter Lavin. Jake Fox was intentionally walked in the next at-bat then Aaron Altherr loaded the bases as he walked. An error by Dan Fiorito allowed Alonso to score from third base and Brock Stassi to reach first base safely to re-load the bases to give the Fightin Phils a 2-1 lead. Lindgren walked Zach Collier in the following at-bat to score Fox and give Reading a 3-1 lead. Lindgren was pulled from the game for Francisco Rondon. Edgar Duran cleared the bases with a three-run double off Rondon to give the Fightins a 6-1 lead. All runs were charged to Lindgren.
Jake Fox added an insurance run off Rondon in the top of the 9th inning as he hit a RBI single to score Carlos Alonso and extend Reading's lead to 7-1. Nefi Ogando finished out the game for the Fightin Phils as he pitched a scoreless bottom of the 9th inning.
The Fightin Phils and Trenton Thunder play at 7:05 pm on Sunday night at Arm & Hammer Park. Ryan O'Sullivan (6-8, 3.95 ERA) will get the start for the Fightin Phils.
