Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
Richmond, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, are proud to announce that they have adopted the slogan "Let's Finish This" as their playoff mantra in a dedication to the late Cameron Gallagher and the Speak Up 5K. "Let's Finish This" were the tragic last words uttered by Cameron prior to her death during the Shamrock Half Marathon in Virginia Beach in March. The Squirrels, along with Cameron's father Dave Gallagher, have united to raise awareness and funds for the Cameron K. Gallagher Benefit Memorial Fund throughout the Squirrels' playoff run. Additionally, the Squirrels staff has formed a team to run in the Speak Up 5K, a race created by the Gallagher family in an effort to honor the life and memory of Cameron.
"The Gallagher family is honored, inspired and appreciative of the support that the Richmond Flying Squirrels have shown to us. The Flying Squirrels are a true community organization and their love for Cameron makes us proud," said Dave Gallagher. "Cameron woke up every day and fought, finished and had faith in her future. She battled depression and she used inspiring quotes and physical activity to overcome her challenges. Her final statement, 'Let's Finish This' is a hallmark of how she lived her life. Now, that statement is an inspiration and source of strength to our community as it represents focusing hard on the achievement of your goal with a positive attitude. It's a fitting rally cry for the playoff bound Flying Squirrels!"
Gallagher is currently conducting a Flying Squirrels playoff ticket fundraiser and will have the honor of throwing out the first pitch at the first postseason game at The Diamond on Friday, September 5th. To purchase tickets and make a donation to the Cameron K. Gallagher Benefit Memorial Fund please contact Susan Nixon at Dominion Payroll Services 804-355-3430.
"The Gallaghers have been a part of the Squirrels family for years and we wanted to find a way to help with their healing while honoring Cameron and the life she led," said Flying Squirrels COO and VP Todd "Parney" Parnell. "It has been an emotional year for them and we hope by honoring Cameron and her words 'Let's Finish This' we can help in the healing process while raising awareness and funds for noble causes."
About The Cameron K. Gallagher Benefit Memorial Fund and Speak Up 5K Cameron Gallagher came up with the idea for the Speak Up 5k while on a run with her mom. She wanted to choose a different cause and charity each year and raise awareness for that cause. Her main goal was to make a difference. She wanted people to "speak up" and help those in need. Cameron died accomplishing a goal that she set for herself. Help us accomplish this goal for her. Cameron started this; we're finishing it. The inaugural Speak Up 5K will be held on September 6th beginning at 9:00 AM. For additional details please visit http://speakup5k.com/
The Flying Squirrels clinched the Western Division title with a 2-1 win on Friday night. The team will begin the postseason on the road beginning on Wednesday, September 3rd. The Flying Squirrels home dates for the Western Division Championship series are Friday, September 5th, Saturday, September 6th (if necessary) and Sunday September 7th (if necessary). For tickets and additional information please contact the Squirrels front office by calling 804-359-FUNN.
