August 28, 2004 - Bowie, MD - Walter Young broke the Baysox single-season home run record with a two-run blast in the bottom of the first inning off Colby Miller, as the Baysox defeated the New Britain Rock Cats, 5-1 in Eastern League action.
With one out in the first inning, Gary Cates reached on an infield single. Ed Rogers hit a single to right field that was misplayed by Ryan Owens, a two-base error, allowing Cates to score from first base. Young followed with a towering shot over the centerfield wall for his 32nd home run of the season, breaking Calvin Pickering's single-season record of 31 home runs, set in 1998.
Jeff Wilson (2-0) earned the win for the Baysox (68-65), pitching 3.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out three in relief of starter Robert Averette. Averette tossed 3.1 scoreless innings in his first start since returning from the disabled list on August 22nd.
Miller (3-7) took the loss giving up five runs on eight hits over 7.0 innings. Ryan Owens drove in the lone Rock Cats (63-67) run with an RBI double in the fifth inning.
Brandon Fahey went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for the Baysox in the win. Keith Reed and Ed Rogers each had two hits.
The Baysox will play their series finale with New Britain on Sunday night at 6:05 pm. LHP Brian Forystek will take the mound for the Baysox against RHP Henry Bonilla.
NOTES: Eugene Kingsale went 0-for-4 in his return to the Baysox lineup after missing three weeks representing the Netherlands in the Olympics in Athens, Greece...Hall-of-Fame pitcher Rollie Fingers will be at Prince George's Stadium on Sunday evening courtesy of Rolaids, to take part in an opportunity for one lucky fan to win $10,000. Fingers will also be available for thirty minutes before the game to sign autographs.
