Toledo Walleye News Release
Walleye Notes
Four for four go the Walleye: Toledo is riding its longest winning streak of the season by winning four consecutive games this past week. It started with a dominating performance Wednesday morning over Indy in a 5-1 Walleye win. Forward Zach Nastasiuk led the way scoring twice. The very next night, Toledo erased a 3-1 second period deficit in Brampton to take a shootout win 4-3 over the Beast. Saturday night, Toledo shut down the Manchester Monarchs, holding them to no goals and only 15 shots, winning 2-0. Toledo scored three power play goals Sunday in Indy, scooping up a 4-3 win to complete the perfect week.
Power play scorching hot: The huge Sunday in which the Walleye power play scored three times in four chances continued what has been a great trend for the Walleye. Toledo has scored 10 times in its last 30 opportunities (30%) over the past eight games. For the season, Toledo's power play ranks third in the ECHL at 21.4%.
Lerg ties Pearce in Walleye history: Goaltender Jeff Lerg posted his fifth shutout in a Walleye uniform with 15 saves Saturday night vs. Manchester, which equals the most shutouts posted by a Toledo Walleye goaltender. Jordan Pearce also had five shutouts in his Walleye career. Lerg is just one shutout shy of the Toledo ECHL record which is 6 held by David Goverde who played for the Toledo Storm from 1995-1997.
Toledo tied a Walleye record: In the second period of Saturday's win, the Walleye tied a record with allowing just two shots on goal from Manchester. That number has been reached three other times in Toledo Walleye history. The 15 total shots for Manchester in the game was just one off of a Walleye record for a single game of 14 set on November 8, 2014, when Toledo held Evansville to 14 shots on goal.
Goal scoring machine: With a goal in four straight games, forward Alden Hirschfeld has set a new career high for goals with 14 and has the longest consecutive goal streak for a Walleye player this season. His previous high in goals was 12 set last year when he posted 11 in Toledo and one more in Grand Rapids. His 14 goals are the second most among ECHL players and his eight power play goals lead the league.
Third sellout this year: A standing room only crowd of 8,200 filled the Huntington Center Saturday night posting the third sellout crowd in eight home games this season. Toledo is averaging 6,729 which is the second most in the ECHL behind only the Fort Wayne Komets who are at 7,278.
On the hook: W ith the holiday break, Toledo has just one game on the schedule as they will host the Wheeling Nailers Saturday night. Toledo and Wheeling split the first two matchups this year. It is also "Holy Toledo" night with the Walleye wearing special Civic Pride Jerseys on a night that will feature everything 4-1-9. Winterfest begins that day with four one-hour open skating sessions at the Huntington Center. Visit www.toledowalleye.com/winterfest for more details.
