Toledo Walleye News Release
Walleye Notes
Only one of three last week: Toledo saw a 2-0 lead evaporate at home on Wednesday night in a 3-2 home loss to Evansville. The Walleye rebounded with a strong performance Friday night and bested the Wheeling Nailers 2-1 in a shootout. Jeff Lerg stopped all three Wheeling shooters and posted 33 saves during the game for the win. The Nailers took the rematch Saturday night in Wheeling in a 6-2 game.
Shootouts are not a thing of the past : Friday night the Walleye picked up their third shootout win of the season. This year Toledo has an even record of three wins and three losses in shootouts. Only Elmira (3-0) has as many shootout wins as Toledo this year and only Orlando (4) is close to Toledo in shootout games played.
Nastasiuk reassigned to Toledo: Forward Zach Nastasiuk has been reassigned to the Walleye. The first-year forward has skated in three games this season for Grand Rapids and another five with the Walleye. The second-round pick of Detroit in the 2013 NHL Draft collected his first pro goal and assist while skating with Toledo earlier this year.
Hirschfeld the power play king: On Wednesday night, Alden Hirschfeld scored both of Toledo's goals which came on the power play. That gives Alden seven power play goals this season, which leads all ECHL players. Hirschfeld leads the Walleye with ten total goals this year.
Jenks has this down: For the fourth time in five shootout opportunities this year, A.J. Jenks found the back of the net. His four shootout goals leads all ECHL players this season. His goal Friday night was the only one scored in the shootout.
A little strange : Toledo scored the first in all three games this past week and went 1-2-0. This comes on the heels of the Walleye allowing the first in seven straight games that saw Toledo post a record of 6-0-1 in those games. The Walleye have the same number of wins (6) when scoring the first goal as they do when allowing the first one (6).
On the hook: Toledo embarks on a four-game week starting Wednesday morning at home against Indy, who they also play Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis. The Walleye have a 2-0-1 record against the Fuel this year with all the games coming in Indiana. Thursday night, Toledo heads north for a game in Brampton. They own a 3-1-0 record vs. the Beast and have outscored Brampton 13-9. Saturday at the Huntington Center, Toledo will host the Manchester Monarchs for the first time ever. The Walleye went 1-1-1 over three games in Manchester back in mid-November.
Walleye Player of the Week:
A.J. Jenks (1 goal - 1 assist = 2 points)
Walleye Goaltender of the Week:
Jeff Lerg (1-1-0, 3.02 GAA, .913 save %)
