Mallards Weekly Update

December 14, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release

QUACK TRACKS

Upswing

The Mallards have won six of their last seven games. They have gone 9-3-0 in their last 12 games after going 5-5-3 in their first 13.

First

The Mallards lead the Cincinnati Cyclones by three points in the race for first place in the ECHL's Midwest Division. The second place Cyclones have three games in hand on the Mallards. The Mallards will face first place clubs in each of their three games this weekend. The Nailers lead the North Division while the Mavericks not only sit atop the Central Division but also occupy the top spot in the league.

Splitsville

The Mallards last weekend split the only two games they will play in Rapid City this season. After Mikhail Stefanovich's second hat trick in as many games propelled the Rush to a 5-2 victory Friday evening, the Mallards rebounded with a 2-1 comeback win one night later.

Stop Sign

Last Friday's loss halted the Mallards' five-game winning streak. That run was the Mallards' first five-game winning streak since they won five in a row in the Central Hockey League between December 21 and December 30, 2013.

Comeback Kids

The Mallards Saturday night overcame a third period deficit for the third time in their last four wins. Goals in the third from Matt Neal and Sam Warning propelled them past the Rush after the Mallards erased a 2-0 Indy lead in the final minute of regulation on the way to a 3-2 overtime win over the Fuel on November 29 and rallied from a 5-2 third period deficit to defeat Evansville 6-5 in sudden death on December 6. The Mallards trailed at some point in seven of their last nine victories.

Road To Recovery

The Mallards have won three of their last four road games after going winless (0-6-2) in their prior eight away tilts. Saturday's win was the Mallards' first regulation road victory since they won their season opener in Allen 2-1 on October 16.

Home Sweet Home

The Mallards have won eight straight home games and are unbeaten in regulation (10-0-1) in 11 home games since dropping their home opener October 23 against Tulsa. The Mallards are three wins away from the team record set when they won 11 straight United Hockey League games at home between January 25 and February 29, 2004. Their current home regulation unbeaten streak is seven games shy of the club record set when they went 18 UHL home games (15-0-3) without a regulation defeat between January 10 and March 13, 2004. The Mallards' home regulation unbeaten streak is also the longest such run in the ECHL this season while their home winning streak is tied for longest in the league this year.

Perfect 10

The Mallards lead the ECHL in home wins (10).

Sunday Fun Day

The Mallards head into Sunday's meeting with Missouri having won their first five Sunday games this season.

Tight

Five of the Mallards' last six games have been decided by just one goal. The Mallards have won their last six one-goal contests. They are 8-3-3 in one-goal games this season.

Muzzled

The Mallards matched a season low by giving up just one goal Saturday after allowing a season high five goals in each of their prior two games.

Between the Pipes

Saturday's victory was Steve Michalek's sixth in a row. Michalek has posted a 1.97 goals against average and a .938 save percentage during that winning streak.

Sudden Impact

Matt Carey has recorded five points (two goals and three assists) in three games since being assigned to the Mallards by the American Hockey League's Iowa Wild December 4.

Warning Signs

Rookie Warning scored the game winning goal Saturday against the Rush after notching his first career shorthanded goal one night earlier in Rapid City. Warning has scored five times (and added two assists) in his last nine games after going goalless in his first 11 games.

Tops

By scoring the equalizer (a goal originally announced as Carey's before being credited to Neal after a postgame scoring change) and assisting on Warning's game winner Saturday night, Neal moved into a tie with Olivier Archambault for the team lead in points (20). Neal also leads the Mallards in goals (10), is tied for third among ECHL rookies in goals and ranks seventh among rookies in points.

Blue Line

Mike Monfredo ranks third among ECHL defensemen in assists (16), is tied for fourth among defensemen in points (19) and is tied for seventh overall in assists after notching five points (one goal and four assists) in his last four games. Guillaume Gelinas is tied for eighth among defensemen in points (16).

Special Teams

The Mallards have killed off their opponents' last 22 power plays and 32 of their foes' last 33 man advantages. The Mallards last allowed a power play goal to Indy's Alex Lavoie at 8:15 of the third period of the Flock's November 29 win over the Fuel. Warning's shorthanded goal last Friday was the Mallards' third this season. The Mallards went 0-for-10 on the power play over two nights after Matt Carey converted the Mallards' first advantage of last Friday's game in Rapid City. The Mallards rank fifth in the ECHL on both the power play (21.1 percent) and the penalty kill (86.3).

Head to Head

The Mallards have gone 0-3-1 this season against this weekend's opponents. The Mallards fell 2-1 in Wheeling on October 31 in their first ever meeting with the Nailers, who Friday make their first visit to the Quad Cities and Saturday wrap up their three-game season series with the Mallards. Sunday's game is the fourth of five this season between the Mallards and Mavericks. The Mallards have gone 0-2-1 against Missouri this year and have suffered a pair of regulation defeats in Missouri. The Mallards will close out their season series with the Mavericks on March 30 at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. All-time, the Mallards have turned in a 23-26-5 overall record against the Mavericks and have gone 13-15-2 in Independence

Milestones

Anthony Collins played his one hundredth career ECHL game Friday at Rapid City and eclipsed 100 penalty minutes as a Mallard by piling up 17 PIM's Saturday against the Rush. Collins, who received a game misconduct Saturday night, has now been assessed 115 penalty minutes since joining the Mallards in a February trade with the South Carolina Stingrays...Monfredo has 99 career points. He is on course to play his two hundredth thirtieth straight game for the Mallards Friday against Wheeling. Monfredo is closing in on eleventh place in team history in games played, a position currently occupied by Kerry Toporowski (236)...Archambault has played 97 career games.
