Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Toledo, OH - The Kalamazoo Wings season-long six-game road swing didn't start as planned, as the K-Wings dropped a 5-1 decision to the Toledo Walleye. The loss snapped the Kalamazoo's five-game (4-0-0-1) road unbeaten streak in regulation.
In just his second professional contest, Shane Berschbach didn't have to wait long to notch his first goal. Sneaking into the slot, Berschbach ripped a slap shot 8:53 into the first period to put the K-Wings ahead 1-0.
Toledo responded earning back-to-back goals to close out the period. Maxim Shalunov (13th) evened the game at 1-1 15:54 into the period when he intercepted a Jordan Binnington breakout pass and quickly placed it back into the open net.
Three minutes later, Kyle Bodie laid a centering pass from behind the net to a streaking Ryan Flanigan (6th) for the go-ahead marker.
Keeping up the pressure in the second period the Walleye erupted for three goals. Getting open in front of the K-Wings crease, Shaulnov (14th) knocked in his second of the game early in the period to push Toledo's leads to 3-1.
From the blue line, Richard Nedomal (8th) extended the Walleye's lead with a power-play strike 5:22 into the period.
Earning his first goal of his pro career, Jake Chelios (1st) snuck into front of the K-Wings net and flung in a Jesse Messier centering attempt 14:55 into the stanza to close out the scoring.
The four-goal loss by the K-Wings is the largest margin of defeat of the season.
Kalamazoo continues their season-long six-game road swing with the second-leg of the trip this Wednesday, April 2nd with a 7:05 p.m. encounter at the First Arena against the Elmira Jackals.
The K-Wings will return home to Wings Stadium to close out the regular season on Saturday, April 12th with a 7:30 p.m. face-off versus the Evansville IceMen on Fan Appreciation Night featuring the post-game player's award ceremony.
