Daytona Tortugas News Release

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - For the second time in as many games, Dunedin erupted for four runs in the opening inning, as the Blue Jays toppled the Daytona Tortugas, 8-4, in front of 2,792 fans at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Saturday night.

Much like Friday, Dunedin (7-4, 48-28) utilized the long ball in the first. LF Cal Stevenson (2-3, 3 R, 2 BB) began the game with a single and moved to second on a walk to C Alejandro Kirk (2-3, R, RBI, 2 BB). On a 3-2 pitch, RF Demi Orimoloye (1-4, R, HR, 3 RBI, BB) hit a 108-mph laser off the nets of the batting cages in left for a three-run home run. The blast - his sixth - put the Blue Jays ahead, 3-0. 1B Kacy Clemens (2-4, 2 R, HR, RBI, BB) proceeded to whack the very next pitch to deep left, as well. That shot sailed out of the ballpark for a solo home run - his fourth of the Florida State League season - to make it a 4-0 affair.

Unlike Friday, however, Daytona (5-7, 40-37) battled back to tie it in the second. Following a leadoff walk to 3B Jonathan India (1-3, R, 3B, BB, SO), SS José García (1-4, R, HR, 2 RBI, SO) hammered the first offering he saw towards the videoboard in left-center for a two-run homer. The 21-year-old's fifth long ball drew the 'Tugas within a pair, 4-2.

The rally did not stop, as DH Hendrik Clementina (1-4, R, 2B, SO) doubled and LF Drew Mount (1-4, R, SO) singled, ultimately resulting with runners at second and third. After a wild pitch scored Clementina, 1B Bruce Yari (1-4, RBI, SO) slapped a single into left field. The RBI knock from the Waterloo, Ont. native tied it at four.

In the sixth, the D-Jays finally broke the tie. 2B Samad Taylor (1-4, R, SO) smashed a one-out single and stole second to begin the attack. Promptly after a walk to Stevenson, 3B Cullen Large (1-4, 2B, RBI, BB, SO) hit an RBI double off the top of the right-center field wall to put Dunedin in front, 5-4. A wild pitch later in the frame extended the Jays' advantage to 6-4.

Dunedin added an RBI two-base hit from CF Chavez Young (2-3, 2B, RBI, 2 BB, SO) in the seventh and an infield run-scoring single by Kirk to jump back ahead by four, 8-4.

RHP Emerson Jiménez (1.0 IP, H, 2 SO) earned his second win in relief, tossing a scoreless fifth. RHP Josh Winckowski (4.0 IP, H, SO) entered in the sixth and hurled four scoreless frames of relief to garner his first professional save. Daytona's RHP Clate Schmidt (2.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, SO) battled, but surrendered the go-ahead runs in the sixth, suffering his first defeat.

Neither starter received a decision on Saturday. LHP Wennington Romero (3.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO) lasted just three innings for the Tortugas, while Dunedin's RHP Julian Merryweather (4.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) made it through four.

Daytona's Copa de la Diversión Weekend comes to a close on Sunday as the first 500 fans through the gates that afternoon will receive a limited edition T-Shirt Giveaway courtesy of ECHO Tools and US Blinds. It will be another Tiny Tugas Night at The Jack with new and exciting theme activities for all kids club members. Additionally, Kids Run the Bases following the ballgame's conclusion.

Daytona will attempt to stave off their first sweep of the season, as RHP Mac Sceroler (4-1, 3.83 ERA) is expected to take the mound in the finale. The Blue Jays are projected to counter with FSL All-Star RHP Máximo Castillo (3-5, 2.91 ERA).
