St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The St. Lucie Mets could not overcome a rocky start as the Clearwater Threshers won 8-2 at First Data Field on Saturday night.
The Threshers scored their first run before recording an out and they ended up scoring in each of the first three innings against Mets starter Dedniel Nunez to take a comfortable 5-0 lead.
Jhailyn Ortiz stroked an RBI single in the first to make it 1-0. Simon Muzziotti ripped a run-scoring double in the second for a 2-0 lead. Matt Kroon belted a two-run double with the bases loaded in the third for a 4-0 advantage. Dalton Guthrie followed with a RBI grounder to make it 5-0.
Nunez was charged with five runs, four earned, in just three innings. He threw 80 pitches and only 42 for strikes.
The Mets tried to claw their way back into the game with a pair of runs in the sixth. Carlos Cortes and Jeremy Vasquez hit back-to-back RBI singles to cut the deficit to 5-2. The single for Vasquez extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
However, the Mets would not get any closer. The Threshers scored three runs off of reliever Conner O'Neil over the seventh and eighth innings. Zach Miller hit a home run, Ortiz hit another RBI single and Muzziotti scored on a wild pitch.
Thomas McIlraith pitched three scoreless innings for the Mets in the loss.
Mitch Ghelfi went 3 for 4.
Threshers relievers Tyler Carr, Keylan Killgore and Kyle Ajrona combined for 4.1 scoreless innings. Carr was credited with the win.
The Mets lost consecutive games for the first time since June 9-10. This is their first series loss of the second half. The Mets dropped to solo second place in the FSL South's second half behind Charlotte, which has won six consecutive games.
The Mets (8-4, 40-38) and Threshers (9-3, 45-33) wrap up their series at First Data Field on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon.
