Clearwater Threshers News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers woke the bats up early against the St. Lucie Mets on Saturday night, plating five of their eight runs in the first three frames in the 8-2 victory at First Data Field. The offensive output was more than the six runs scored over the previous three games.
Clearwater (45-33, 9-3) attacked Dedniel Nunez (1-3) early to grab a run in the opening frame. Matt Vierling dropped a single into center to start the night, and moved up to second when Simon Muzziotti reached on an error.
Jhailyn Ortiz wasted no time in his first at-bat, rolling a single up the middle to push across Vierling for the 1-0 advantage.
The Threshers used a two-out rally in the second to add an insurance run. Vierling kept the inning alive with a walk and scored on Muzziotti's double down the right side for the 2-0 edge.
The early runs did not stop there, as the visitors tallied three more to break the game open in the third stanza.
Nick Maton smacked a single into right to lead off the inning, and stole second during Madison Stokes' plate appearance. After a walk to put two men on, Rodolfo Duran bounced into a fielder's choice, eliminating Stokes from the base paths.
Luke Miller drew a free pass to load the bases for Matt Kroon, who rocketed a double off the wall in right to score two more runs. Dalton Guthrie followed by reaching on a fielding error, allowing Miller to cross the plate for the 5-0 lead.
Kyle Glogoski had a chance for his second win in as many starts at the Advanced-A level, but fell an out shy of recording the victory. The right-hander walked Matt Winaker to start the bottom of the fifth, but struck out Edgardo Fermin and retired Blake Tiberi on a lineout.
The New Zealand native gave up a single to Jacob Zanon, ending the night for the 20-year-old.
Tyler Carr (2-0)relieved the starter and surrendered back-to-back RBI singles to Carlos Cortes and Jeremy Vasquez to cut the lead down to three. The right-handed reliever picked up the win with 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.
The road team pushed the lead out to four in the seventh when Miller lifted off for a solo blast to left for his first home run as a Thresher.
Ortiz delivered another run-scoring single in the eight inning, and Muzziotti scored on a wild pitch to cap off the scoring for the night.
Clearwater takes aim at the series sweep in the finale of the three-game set against the St. Lucie Mets at First Data Field on Sunday afternoon.
