Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds wrapped up a series victory against the Charleston RiverDogs with a 3-1 final on Sunday evening. Josh Walker led the way with a quality start, while shortstop Guillermo Salas hit his first professional home run in the victory.
Walker came into Sunday's outing, having won both starts on the Shorebirds' most recent road trip. Walker continued that success with a quality start, pitching six innings and surrendering just one run on five hits. The only RiverDogs' run came in the fifth when Isaias Tejeda scored on a sacrifice fly.
With Walker dealing, Delmarva did not need a ton of run support. The Shorebirds received some help when a throwing error by Jorge Mateo sparked a second inning rally. After the error, Elier Leyva drew a walk to put two runners on for Steel Russell. In his first at-bat with Delmarva this season, Russell split the right-center gap for a two-run double and 2-0 lead.
After Charleston scored to pull back to 2-1, Guillermo Salas responded in the bottom of the fifth. The Shorebirds' shortstop launched a solo home run to left field, the first home run of his professional career.
With a 3-1 lead, Walker gave the ball off to the bullpen after his six innings. Max Schuh retired five straight batters in relief before walking Mateo with two outs in the eighth. Garrett Cortright entered for a four-out save for Delmarva. After stranding Mateo in scoring position in the eighth, Cortright ran into some tough luck in the ninth. With two outs, Tejeda singled on a high hop over Salas and Collin Slaybaugh chopped an infield single to put the tying run on. Cortright ended the game with a groundout to shortstop, sealing up the 3-1 win.
With the victory, Walker improved to 7-2 and Cortright locked up his 12th save of the season. Jordan Foley settled for the loss for Charleston. Taking three of four from the RiverDogs, Delmarva has now won five consecutive home series to start the second half.
The Shorebirds now welcome in the first half division champions, the Hickory Crawdads. Left-hander Brian Gonzalez (4-6, 5.64) will start the series opener for Delmarva. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
