August 2, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Falling behind early was not a problem for the Greenville Drive on Sunday afternoon, as a six-run bottom of the sixth was instrumental in a 7-6 victory over the Lexington Legends. With the win, the Drive clinched a 3-1 series victory at Fluor Field this weekend.
Trailing 4-1, the Drive (17-19, 55-51) sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth inning, and the first eight of them reached base. Nick Longhi lined a single to get the ball rolling, and he moved to third on Javier Guerra's double to right field. A dropped infield pop-up loaded the bases, and Francisco Tellez drew a bases-loaded walk that chased Legends (14-19, 45-58) reliever Emilio Ogando from the game.
The big inning continued against Jake Newberry when J.T. Watkins lined a two-run double to the wall in left to tie the game at four. A walk to Bryan Hudson loaded the bases again, and Yoan Moncada and Michael Chavis followed with RBI singles to make the score 6-4. An RBI groundout by Rafael Devers plated the sixth run of the inning.
Lexington took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first against Jeffry Fernandez. With two men on base and one out, a ground ball looked like a potential double play, but after stepping on second base for an out, Yoan Moncada's throw short hopped first base and brought in a run. Anderson Miller followed with an RBI single for the second run.
Tellez drove home the Drive's first run of the game with a groundout in the second.
A sacrifice fly in the third by Brandon Downes pushed Lexington's lead to 3-1, and they added another run in the top of the sixth on another sacrifice fly, this one by Corey Toups.
Lexington made things interesting with two runs in the eighth to cut the Drive lead to 7-6, but Ryan Harris got a strikeout to end the inning and recorded a 1-2-3 ninth to nail down his fourth save.
Jamie Callahan improved to 4-6 after throwing two and two-third innings of relief.
Watkins drove home a pair of runs as part of a 2-4 day. Moncada had two hits, two walks and two steals, while Chavis added two hits as well.
The Drive commence a seven-game road trip on Monday with a three-game series against the Northern Division-leading West Virginia Power, affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. First pitch is at 7:05 PM.
