Walk-Off Double Dooms Spikes in 1-0 Game One Loss to Spinners

LOWELL, MA - State College Spikes starter Adrian Sampson retired 13 batters in a row at one point and did not yield a hit until the fifth inning, but the Lowell Spinners broke through for the only run of the game on Kendrick Perkins' walk-off double in the seventh inning to earn a 1-0 win over the Spikes in game one of a doubleheader at LeLacheur Park on Sunday evening.

Sampson, the 2012 fifth-round draft choice of the Pirates, yielded just a first-inning walk to Deven Marrero and a fifth-inning single by Jake Davies during his time on the mound. The five-inning outing was the longest of Sampson's professional career, and the right-hander notched four strikeouts as well.

State College (23-17) had opportunities to score early in the game. Alex Fuselier and Barrett Barnes delivered back-to-back singles in the first inning, and after a wild pitch, advanced to third base and second base, respectively. However, Fuselier was then picked off of third and a subsequent popout ended the Spikes threat.

Samuel Gonzalez then chased Lowell (14-26) starter Brian Johnson from the mound in the second inning by lining a ball off of his left leg for a fielder's choice. Johnson, a first-round draft pick of the Red Sox this year out of Florida, was making his professional debut with the Spinners on Sunday.

However, reliever Francisco Taveras (3-1) took over and allowed just one more hit to State College the rest of the way. Taveras added three strikeouts as well over 5 2/3 innings of work for the win.

In the seventh inning, Mookie Betts lined a one-out single to right field to set up Perkins' game-winner off of Spikes reliever Pat Ludwig (2-1).

Ludwig had allowed just one walk in 1 1/3 innings before allowing the lone run of the game to take his first loss as a professional.

Fuselier collected two of the Spikes' three hits in the game.

The second game of the doubleheader between the Spikes and Spinners will start at approximately 7:30 p.m. Left-hander Joely Rodriguez (2-0) gets the start for State College, while right-hander Mike Augliera (0-2) goes to the mound for Lowell.
