Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MA - The Lowell Spinners pitching staff is firing on all cylinders, twirling their third consecutive shutout, a first in Lowell Minor League Baseball since 1915, as Mike Augliera, Tyler Wilson and Kyle Kraus combined for a two-hit shutout of the State College Spikes in Game Two of Sunday's doubleheader, 2-0.

The three Spinners pitchers also did not walk a batter, the first time since August 11, 2010 the team did not issue a free pass.

Lowell (15-26) got on the board in the third inning, taking advantage of a two-out throwing error by State College shortstop Chris Diaz, allowing Deven Marrero to reach at first. Marrero promptly stole second and third, scoring on a Dreily Guerrero RBI single to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.

State College (23-18) could do little against Augliera, who set down all nine Spikes he faced, striking out five through the first three innings.

The Spinners extended their lead in the fifth inning on the heels of a leadoff double by Zach Kapstein. A wild pitch advanced Kapstein to third and he would score on an RBI single by Mike Miller, putting the Spinners up 2-0.

Wilson and Kraus finished off the shutout, Wilson allowing just two hits, striking out three in three innings, while Kraus pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his second save.

Marrero extended his on-base streak to 16 games, going 1-for-3 with a double, run scored and three stolen bases to give him a team leading 13 on the season. On the opposite end, Mookie Betts saw his on-base streak snapped at 13, going 0-for-3.

The Spinners go for the sweep and their fourth consecutive win Monday evening on $1,000 Hot Dog Night at LeLacheur Park. Hot dogs can have anywhere from $1 to $100 in their wrappers. Pat Light gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch as the staff sets their sights on the consecutive scoreless inning record of 25, set by the 2011 club.
