Doubledays Lose Opener to ValleyCats, 5-1

AUBURN, N.Y. - The Auburn Doubledays (24-15) couldn't get past the New York - Penn League leading Tri-City ValleyCats (29-11) on Saturday night, falling in the first game of a three-game series, 5-1. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Auburn.
Doubledays starter LHP Blake Monar (2-3) kept the ValleyCats off the board until the top of the sixth. In the sixth CF Andrew Aplin walked with one out. Two batters later DH Tyler Heineman was hit by a pitch from Monar, putting two on with two outs. Consecutive singles from 3B Ryan Dineen and LF Jarrod McKinney drove both runners in, to give Tri-City the lead for good.
Auburn had taken a 1-0 lead in the third thanks to an RBI double from 1B Carlos Lopez. Right fielder Estarlin Martinez, who earlier in the game extended his current team-high hitting streak to 11 games, had reached base on a fielder's choice and scored from first on Lopez's double. The Doubledays only collected three more hits in the final six innings.
Tri-City extended its lead in the seventh thanks to a leadoff double from RF Emilio King. King moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and then scored on a double off the bat of 2B Austin Elkins. It was a two-run homerun from King in the ninth that stretched the ValleyCats lead and ensuing margin of victory to four.
Monar took the loss for Auburn, finishing with a line of six innings pitched, five hits allowed, two earned runs, one walk and four strikeouts. RHP Travis Henke pitched the final three innings and was charged for the other three runs. RHP Lance Day (2-0) got the win for the ValleyCats by allowing one earned run on six hits in six innings.
The Doubledays continue their three-game series with the ValleyCats on Sunday, July 29. Auburn will send RHP Silvio Medina (0-0) to the mound for his fourth start of the year. He will square off against LHP Joe Bircher (0-2) for Tri-City. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm. Hillside family of Agencies will be celebrating its 175th anniversary by hosting a community night. All concession items will only cost $1.75 to honor the anniversary, and team photos will also be given away. In addition, it will be a Time Warner customer discount night and all children 12 and under will be able to run the bases following the game thanks to the Tompkins Trust Company.
