Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS (Sunday, July 29): The Hudson Valley Renegades roundly dominated the Williamsport Crosscutters with a 9-2 victory Sunday in front of 4,035 fans at Dutchess Stadium. The Renegades (26-15) hammered the Williamsport (13-28) pitching staff for eight runs over three innings to assume control early on, and never trailed after the second inning. Hudson Valley rapped out a total of 11 hits and gave up just one walk in the ballgame to limit the scoring opportunities for the visiting Crosscutters.

Williamsport earned an early lead in the top of the second inning. Cameron Perkins placed a double up the right field line with one out, and Mitch Walding drew a walk behind him to put runners on first and second. Zach Taylor ripped a ball into the right-center gap for a triple that scored Perkins and Walding, and gave the Crosscutters the 2-0 advantage.

Hudson Valley struck back in the bottom of the inning. Third baseman Richie Shaffer led off with a walk against Crosscutters starter Jon Musser (0-4), and moved to second on a single by first baseman Luke Maile. Shortstop Ryan Dunn doubled them home to tie the ballgame on a rocket to center field. Left fielder Marty Gantt shot a liner into the right-center field gap for a triple to score Dunn, and came home himself when catcher Chace Numata mishandled a pitch for a passed ball. After two innings, the Renegades led 4-2.

The 'Gades tacked on another in the bottom of the third. With one out, second baseman Tommy Coyle was hit by a pitch, and moved around to third on a double to left from Shaffer. After Maile grounded out to third, Dunn walked to load the bases. Gantt had a patient at-bat, and earned his own walk to bring home Coyle and run the lead to 5-2 for Hudson Valley.

The Renegades blew the game open in the fourth inning. Right fielder Charles Epperson and center fielder Joey Rickard led off the inning with back-to-back singles to bring up designated hitter Justin O'Conner. O'Conner smashed a three-run homer to left field, giving him a team-high three on the season and putting the 'Gades up 8-2.

Hudson Valley tacked on an exclamation point in the sixth inning. O'Conner led off with a single, and moved up to second with one out on a wild pitch. Shaffer singled, advancing O'Conner to third. Maile bounced a grounder to third that looked like an around-the-horn double play waiting to happen, but the throw to first from second baseman Gustavo Gonzalez went wild, allowing Maile to reach safely and scoring O'Conner. The run made it 9-2 Renegades, and that's how the scoring ended.

Renegades starter Jesse Hahn gave up two runs on three hits and a walk over four innings, striking out four. Eduar Quiñonez (4-1) tossed four shutout innings to earn the win, allowing three hits and whiffing four. Rob Finneran pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.

Musser coughed up five runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks in 2.2 innings for Williamsport; he struck out one. Nic Hanson was shelled for four runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings on seven hits, including O'Conner's homer. Andrew Aizenstadt threw two perfect innings for the Crosscutters, whiffing three.

The Renegades will go for the sweep against the Crosscutters Monday night. Lefty Matt Spann will get the ball for Hudson Valley against Australian righty Josh Warner for the Crosscutters. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m., with Ben Gellman's pregame show starting at 6:50 p.m. on 1450 and 1370 AM WKIP, as well as online at HVRenegades.com.
