Volcan's Pair Gets Seattle past Everett

KENT, Wash. - Nolan Volcan had a two-goal night as the Seattle Thunderbirds snuck past the Everett Silvertips, 2-1, before 5,776 fans from the accesso ShoWare Center in U.S. Division action on Saturday.

Robbie Holmes scored the lone goal for the Silvertips, his 12th goal of the season, in a sequence where Zack Andrusiak picked up an assist in his 200th career WHL game. Everett hammered 47 total shots on goal, but now drop to 46-15-2-2 on the season, while keeping the first seed in the Western Conference in eye.

The Tips went 7-2-1-0 in the head-to-head series against Seattle this season.

In a scoreless first, the Silvertips landed 16 shots on Seattle goaltender Roddy Ross, while the Everett defense limited the Thunderbirds to three shots, all easily turned away from reigning CHL and WHL Goaltender of the Week, Dustin Wolf.

The Silvertips had some huge crease front chances during two power play opportunities in the opening frame.

The Thunderbirds took a 1-0 lead at 9:34 in the second as forward Nolan Volcan deflected a shot to convert with nine seconds left on a the first Seattle power play of the night. Forward Sean Richards fed Simon Kubicek at the blue line, who took a shot into traffic and tipped past Wolf.

Everett forward Robbie Holmes answered back to tie the game, 1-1, at 14:37. Forward Zack Andrusiak led captain Connor Dewar into the offensive zone for a two-on-one chance, where Holmes picked up centering pass and batted the puck in on the blocker side of Ross.

The Silvertips continued to hold the edge on shots, 34-13, after 40 minutes of play.

Volcan gave Seattle a 2-1 lead at 17:39 in the third. Volcan picked up a bouncing puck off the backboards and stashed a one-timer. Matthew Wedman and Kubicek both recorded assists on the play.

Thunderbird Tyrel Bauer committed a checking from behind penalty at 18:09 in the third, giving the Silvertips a late 6-on-4 opportunity as Wolf was pulled for the extra attacker, opening the door for one last flurry of Tips scoring chances that fell short.

Everett finished with a total of 47 shots on net, while Seattle finished with 20 shots.
