Rio Grande Valley Vipers News Release
FRISCO, TX - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (12-9) used outside shooting to take down the Texas Legends (8-15) in the second half of the Frisco matchup, striking 108-79.
Texas took an early lead, maintaining control through the first nine minutes before the Vipers' hot shooting kicked in. Hitting 60%, RGV knocked down eight unanswered points and carried a six-point advantage into the second. The Vipers went on a 12-0 streak midway through the second to take an 18-point lead, but Texas shut the visitors down from there, allowing only four points in the final five minutes of the half.
Facing a four-point deficit out of the locker room, Texas' Ray Spalding and Jameel Warney teamed up for six straight to get back in the driver's seat. After two scoreless minutes, Brandon Knight took an outside shot and put the visitors back in their final leading position. Holding Texas to 32 second-half points, the Vipers coasted to the finish line.
Texas shot 37% to RGV's 45% and 26% outside to the visitors' 38%, but the difference came in the numbers as the Vipers set a new opponent-high for Texas, shooting 53 threes.
Warney had the game's only double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and a block, making it his fourth straight game to hit every category. Ray Spalding led the Legends' scoring efforts with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks, while Kostas Antetokounmpo added 14 points, 9 rebounds. Keith Hornsby (16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists) and Daryl Macon (10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals) rounded out the home team's double-digit scoring.
Michael Frazier led the Vipers with 25 points, 6 rebounds while Isaiah Hartenstein had a game-high 21 rebounds and 7 points. Bruno Caboclo added 19 points, 4 blocks and Gary Payton II and Brandon Knight put up 14 points each.
The Vipers will return to Bert Ogden Arena on January 3rd to host Santa Cruz Warriors. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m. For more information, contact the RGV Vipers at 956-56-ARENA or visit www.rgvipers.com.
