
Vipers shoot down Bayhawks

HIDALGO, Texas - Kelvin Lewis scored 19 points including five three-point baskets to lead the Rio Grande Valley Vipers to a season-opening 122-113 victory over the Erie Bayhawks Friday night at the State Farm Arena. The victory was the first RGV win for Nick Nurse who made his Vipers coaching debut on Friday.
Lewis helped lead a second half surge that saw the Vipers outscore the Bayhawks 36-27 in the third quarter to lead by as many as 18 points. Vipers guard Lee Humphrey also contributed to the third quarter three-point push. The former Florida Gator tallied three of his five three-pointers in the third quarter to help the Vipers hold off Erie.
The Bayhawks outscored RGV 38-33 in the fourth quarter, but could not rally back after falling behind in the third. Mychel Thompson scored eight of his 24 points in the 4th quarter with his three-pointer with 29 seconds remaining cutting the deficit down to seven. Thompson's 24 led all scorers.
Lewis paced the Vipers with his 19 points adding four rebounds and a pair of assists. Marshall Brown and Humphrey each added 18 with Brown also adding 18 rebounds. Stanley Asumnu and Sam Coleman each added 15 with Coleman finishing a rebound shy of a double-double. Terrell Harris finished two rebounds shy of a double-double after scoring 14 points while also leading the Vipers with four steals defensively.
Erie point guard Donald Sloan tallied the lone double-double of the game with 21 points and a game high 12 assists. Kyle Goldkamp had a strong night on the boards finishing with 19 including seven on the offensive glass, while also adding nine points. Thompson was two boards shy of a double-double after scoring his 24. He also hit four of his seven three-point attempts.
The Vipers continue their season opening four game home-stand on Saturday night as they play host to Erie for the second straight night. Tip-off at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, TX is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
