HIDALGO, Texas, March 28, 2015 - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (26-22) topped the Austin Spurs (31-16) 127-102 this afternoon at State Farm Arena. The Vipers now sit in the fourth position of the western conference and are one game ahead of the Oklahoma City Blue.
Jaron Johnson led the Vipers with 24 points, followed by Glen Rice, Jr. with 23 points. Travis Bader tallied 22 points and shot 5-for-6 from three-point range. Jarvis Threatt scored a double-double 19 points and 11 rebounds. Tony Bishop also notched a double-double 17 points and 10 rebounds.
San Antonio Spurs assignee Kyle Anderson led Austin with 18 points. Orlando Johnson scored 16 points, followed by Keith Wright with 15 points.
Austin led throughout most of the first half of the game. Anderson connected on a jump shot and made a free throw to give the Spurs their largest lead 39-29 a minute into the second quarter. Bader responded with a shot to cut into the lead 39-31, but Austin again able to grab a10-point lead again, 49-39, with 5:45 remaining in the first half. Threatt followed with a layup to send the Vipers on a 16-5 run to steal a 55-54 lead. At halftime, the Vipers held a 62-61 advantage.
RGV controlled the second half of the game. The Vipers outscored the Spurs 32-22 in the third quarter and 33-19 in the fourth quarter.
Next up, the Vipers travel to Austin on Thursday, April 2. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (CT). RGV's final regular-season game is Saturday, April 4 when the Vipers host the Los Angeles D-Fenders at 7 p.m. (CT) at State Farm Arena. Prior to the game, the team will host the Fifth Annual All-Valley Showcase, presented by AT&T. The games will feature the top high school from across the Rio Grande Valley. The girls game is set for 1 p.m. and the boys tip at 3:30 at State Farm Arena.
