
Vipers Outscore Austin 127-117 in Home Opener

EDINBURG, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (1-0) defeated the Austin Spurs (0-1) 127-117 on Friday night at Bert Ogden Arena as both teams opened the 2021-22 NBA G League season.
The Vipers were led by Houston Rockets two-way player Garrison Mathews with a game-high of 28 points, four rebounds. He recorded five three-pointers for the night. Trevelin Queen totaled 20 points with three rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks.
From off the bench, Christian Vital recorded 18 points while contributing four assists. Tyler Bey from off the bench nearly hit a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
RGV led the entire game, outscoring Austin 41-32 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Vipers managed to lead the Spurs by 20 points before the period ended.
Following the half, Austin scored 17 points while allowing five points to be scored by the Vipers. In the fourth, the Spurs attempted to grab the lead but fell short.
The Vipers shot 48.5% from the field, while Austin shot 51.8% and 42.4% from beyond the arc.
All of Austin's starters scored in the double-figures, while Jaylen Morris scored a team-high of 17 points from off the bench. Damyean Dotson earned a double-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds while dishing out five assists.
