Greensboro Swarm News Release

(GREENSBORO, N.C.) - The Greensboro Swarm, the NBA G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets, opened the 2021-22 season with a 128-117 setback to the Birmingham Squadron (New Orleans Pelicans affiliate) on Friday. The game welcomed back Swarm fans to the Fieldhouse at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex for the first time in 615 days (February 29, 2019).

Greensboro was led by Hornets assignment player JT Thor who had a team-high 34 points to go with 12 rebounds for his first career double-double. The visitors had the leading scorer of the contest in Jared Harper who had 35 points on 12-of-21 shooting.

The game was tied after the first quarter (27-27) but a strong second quarter by the Squadron built a lead that they would maintain for the remainder of the game. Birmingham outscored the Swarm 32-18 in the frame on 52 percent shooting to carry a 59-45 halftime edge.

Greensboro had several pushes late in the third and fourth quarter, coming within nine points on eight different occasions but timely baskets by the Squadron secured the win.

In addition to Thor, the Swarm had strong performances from LiAngelo Ball and Arnoldas Kulboka, who both scored 20-plus points. Ball, in his NBA G League debut, dazzled off the bench to score 22 points (9-19 FG, 4-7 3FG) in 24 minutes. Kulboka, a Hornets two-way player, went 7-for-12 from the field and nailed four three-pointers of his own to end up with 20 points and eight rebounds in 31 minutes.

Other double figure scorers for Greensboro included Vernon Carey Jr. (11 points) and D.J. Carton (15 points). Jalen Crutcher was the main distributor for the Swarm offense, finishing the game with 14 assists.

For the Squadron, Joe Young (30 points) joined Harper in the 30-plus points club. Birmingham had seven players score at least 10 points, including Ra'Shad James (13), Zylan Cheatham (12), Riley LaChance (11), Malcolm Hill (10) and James Banks III.

Greensboro and Birmingham run it back on Saturday at the Fieldhouse with a 7:00 p.m. ET tip.
