
Vipers Fall to Reno 123-121

HIDALGO, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (10-2) fell 123-121 to the Reno Bighorns (5-6) tonight at State Farm Arena.
Troy Daniels led the Vipers with 29 points. Three Vipers scored double-doubles. Isaiah Canaan scored a double-double 23 points, 11 rebounds. Kevin Parrom tallied a double-double 16 points, 10 rebounds, and Robert Covington added a double-double 15 points, 11 rebounds. Chris Johnson also added 18 points.
Tajuan Porter led the Bighorns with 32 points, followed by Mo Charlo with 22 points. Brandon Heath contributed 18 points, and K.C. Rivers tallied 15 points. Trent Lockett notched 13 points, and Mickell Gladness scored 10 points.
Lockett scored the first basket of the game for the Bighorns with a three-point shot. Johnson answered with a shot from behind the arc for the Vipers to tie the game at three. The score tied three times in the first quarter, with Reno holding a 35-24 lead at the end.
The Vipers tied the game at 39 points a minute and a half into the second quarter, courtesy of a three-pointer from Daniels. Porter responded for the Bighorns with a three-point shot to take a 42-39 lead. Reno led the rest of the first half by as many as 8 points on three occasions. Two free throws from Covington sent the Vipers on a 6-2 run to end the first half. At halftime, the Bighorns led 68-66.
RGV used the first five minutes of the third quarter to cut their deficit. Canaan connected on a three-point shot to take the 78-76 lead, and Hunt followed with a layup to put the Vipers ahead 80-76 at the 6:59 mark. Lockett answered with a shot from behind the arc, and Rivers made a layup to put Reno back up 81-80. Lockett sank a shot at the line, but Daniels responded with a three-point shot to give the Vipers the 83-82 lead. Both teams fought for control through the rest of the quarter, but Reno held a 95-91 advantage at the end of the third.
Daniels used consecutive three-pointers to tie the score at 99 points with 7:49 left in the game. Canaan knocked down a three-pointer to give the Vipers a 107-103 advantage with 6:04 remaining. A few possessions later, Charlo sank a jump shot that put Reno back on top 110-109. The Bighorns built their lead to six points, 121-115 with 0:24.9 remaining in the game. Canaan responded with back-to-back three-pointers, but the Vipers were unable to take the win. The Bighorns claimed the game 123-121.
The Vipers hit the road next week for a pair of road games. First, the Vipers visit the Erie BayHawks on Friday, Dec. 27 at 6 p.m. (CT). Then, RGV travels to Fort Wayne on Saturday, Dec. 28 for a 6:30 p.m. (CT) tipoff.
