Erie, Pennsylvania - The Erie BayHawks claimed their first victory of the season with a 104-101 victory over the visiting Texas Legends on Friday night at the Erie Insurance Arena. In a back-and-forth game, the BayHawks were able to pull ahead for good with 37.9 seconds left to down Texas.
Texas jumped ahead to an early double-digit lead when Melvin Ely knocked down two free throws to put the Legends ahead by 10 midway through the first quarter. Erie battled back to cut the deficit to just three at the end of the first.
Erie's Scott Suggs scored nine of his team-high 28 points in the second quarter as the BayHawks were able to control most of the frame. As the two teams broke for intermission, Erie held a 47-42 lead. Suggs led all scorers with 14 first half points while Ely paced Texas with 12 points.
The third quarter featured seven lead changes and four ties as the two teams played continued to battle. Suggs and Devin Ebanks of the Legends had their own personal duel in the quarter as Suggs added 12 more to his tally while Ebanks caught fire for 14 points.
The BayHawks started the final quarter down by three points before Texas extended their lead to seven. The fourth quarter was another back-and-forth affair as the two team traded the lead seven more times. Erie's Jeremy Tyler converted on a Lewis Jackson missed free throw to put Erie ahead by one with under two minutes remaining. A couple of fine defensive plays by Ricky Davis down the stretch helped Erie keep the lead and eventually down the Legends 104-101.
Suggs paced Erie with 28 while Tyler added a 16 point and 16 rebound double-double. Erie's bench performed well as Davis (14), Jackson (14) and CJ Leslie (18 points and 8 rebounds) all contributed to Erie's winning effort. Texas was paced by Ebanks' game high 35 points, including eight three-pointers. Dallas Mavericks assignee Ricky Ledo added 20 points and 7 rebounds and Ely finished with 15 for the Legends.
The two teams will return to action tomorrow night at the Erie Insurance Arena at 7 pm.
