
Vipers Fall Short to Stars in OT

EDINBURG, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (1-8) fought until the last minute in overtime but fell 124-122 to the Salt Lake City Stars (5-2) after a long battle on Tuesday night at the Bert Ogden Arena.
The battle to obtain a win was on. The court was a back-and-forth battlefield in the first quarter as both teams fought both defensively and offensively. Salt Lake grasped a 15-14 lead and maintained it for the remainder of the quarter. After going on a 27-18 run, the quarter ended 41-33 in favor of the Stars.
The Stars kept shining in the second quarter with their lead, but the Vipers were about to dim the brightness down on Salt Lake City by tying up the game 49-49 after a 16-8 run by both teams. Salt Lake pulled ahead once again and closed off the second quarter with a 68-62 lead.
William Howard was the star of the first half as his shooting percentage was at 100 percent. He scored 20 points; 18 points of which were scored off the 3-point line. Teammate and two-way player, Jarrell Brantley, had 19 points and three rebounds. Trailing behind was Justin Wright-Foreman with 10 points and five rebounds.
Ray Spalding and Denver Nuggets assignee Jarred Vanderbilt were tied at the half with 12 points scored.
RGV continued fighting through the third quarter, but the Stars did not want to give up its 102-88 lead over the Vipers.
In the fourth quarter, the Vipers shined brighter than the Stars as they quickly grasped control of the quarter. With 4:13 remaining on the clock, RGV shortened the lead for Salt Lake by two points 111-109.
Before the final whistle, guard Angel Rodriguez stole the ball from Salt Lake and tied the game 121-121 forcing the matchup to go to overtime.
On the Vipers side, all of the starters reached double digits in scoring during the regular period Roger Moute a Bidias (11), Jaron Blossomgame (28, team-high), Spalding (14), Sindarius Thornwell (14) and Rodriguez (16). Vanderbilt also reached double digits in scoring with 18 points.
After an overtime battle the Stars came out with a 124-122 victory. Brantley scored a game-high of 31 points adding eight rebounds, shooting 12-19 from the field. In addition, the Stars had four players who scored in the double digits; Howard (27), Wright-Foreman (26), Trevon Bluiett (13) and Rodney Pryor (12 off the bench). Howard shot 10-12 from the field and 7-9 from behind the arc.
