Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers fell behind early and could never get back into the game as they were handed a 15-3 defeat on Thursday night by the Joliet JackHammers. The Vipers found themselves trailing 6-0 after three innings and couldn't find a way back into the game.
The Vipers defense didn't help the cause either, committing five errors in the game.
Scott Sarver (1-2) took the loss for Calgary after allowing six hits and six earned run in just three innings of work. Derell McCall (3-2) earned the win for the JackHammers in the contest, pitching seven complete innings, giving up three runs while striking out five.
Joliet got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning on a solo homerun by Melvin Nieves off Sarver that put the JackHammers up 1-0. The home side then brought five runs across in the bottom of the third inning to move ahead by six.
Jose Amado came up with a bases loaded double that scored three-runs to lead the charge for the JackHammers. Rob Stratton also belted a two-run homerun in the inning to give the JackHammers a big lead.
The Vipers were able to cut the lead in half with three runs in the top of the fourth inning off McCall. Nelson Castro led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by Darryl Brinkley before Aaron McEachran hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Castro. Josh Carter then plated Brinkley with an RBI single.
Brandon Rogers also scored on a wild pitch in the inning to make it 6-3.
The JackHammers then blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth with another five runs off Vipers pitching. Amado picked up his fourth RBI of the game with a run-scoring groundout and Maikel Jova hit a two-run single putting Joliet up 9-3.
Still in the fourth a pair of errors, one by Castro and one by Sam Rosario, allowed the JackHammers to push the lead to 11-3.
Joliet made it 14-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run double by Seth Pietsch and an RBI single by Blake Gill. The JackHammers added one more in the bottom of the eighth when Gill brought in a run with a double.
The loss drops the Vipers back to .500 in the second half as they now sit with a record of 10-10. Calgary will look to rebound from tonight's loss when they face the JackHammers for game two of the series on Friday night. The three-game set will wrap up on Saturday night in Joliet before the Vipers return home on Monday to host the Gary SouthShore RailCats.
