Joliet JackHammers News Release
JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers pounded out 15 runs on 14 hits to beat the Calgary Vipers 15-3 before 2,745 at Silver Cross Field on Thursday night. The JackHammers (9-9) opened up a seven-game home stand with their third consecutive win. With the Schaumburg Flyers winning Thursday in Kansas City, the JackHammers maintain their half-game lead over the Flyers for first place in the Northern League East Division.
The JackHammers jumped all over Calgary starter Scott Sarver (1-2), who lasted just three innings. Joliet opened up the scoring with a solo home run from the bat of Melvin Nieves (2-3) in the second inning. Nieves hit his third home run of the season and Joliet took a 1-0 lead.
The JackHammers pounded out five runs in the third and fourth innings. Rob Stratton (1-4) hit a two-run home run and newcomer Jose Amado (1-4) laced a three run double. For Stratton, it was his third home run as a JackHammer and for Amado, the hit was his first as a JackHammer in 2006 after starting off the year with Poza Rica in the Mexican League. Amado finished his 2006 Joliet debut with four RBI.
The JackHammers other newcomer, Seth Pietsch was acquired from the San Diego Surf Dogs in exchange for Will Henderson before the game. Pietsch (2-5) hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to help the JackHammers offense tack on runs.
Derell McCall (3-2) pitched seven innings and allowed three runs, (all earned), on seven hits. He walked one and struck out five to pick up the win.
Loose Gravel: McCall made just his third start of the season for Joliet but his 100th career start. He worked as a starting pitcher in the Oakland A's organization and as a starter with the Worcester Tornadoes of the independent Canadian-American League in 2005.
The JackHammers and Vipers continue their three-game series Friday night. The JackHammers have yet to announce their starting pitcher. The right-hander Evan Greusel (6-0, 2.98) gets the start for Calgary. The pre-game show begins at 6:50 and the play-by-play starts with the first pitch at 7:05.
