June 7, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers got a spectacular pitching performance from starter Joe Sergent in defeating the Orange County Flyers 4-1 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. After giving up back-to-back hits to start the game Sergent (2-1) retired the next 20 batters he faced before finally giving up a hit with two outs in the seventh inning. Tossing a complete game the left-hander gave up only three hits while striking out five and not walking a batter. With the win the Vipers move to 10-4 on the season and increase their first place lead in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.
Fehlandt Lentini had a great game at the plate going three-for-four with two runs scored and batted in. Jorge Mejia also had a multi-hit game going two-for-four with a run batted in.
Orange County started the scoring in the top of the first inning as Steve Boggs singled and scored on a Fernando Pacheco run batted in double for a 1-0 lead.
Lentini responded for the Vipers in the bottom half of the frame with a leadoff solo home run to tie the game at one.
With two outs in the second inning Rob Recuenco walked, moved to second base on a throwing error by the pitcher Durkin, and scored on a Lentini RBI single. The two-out rally continued as Nelson Castro collected a base hit and Mejia knocked in Lentini with a single for the 3-1 lead.
Calgary added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Rick Guarno and Recuenco walked, and Lentini singled to load the bases. Castro followed by lining out to shortstop Damian Jackson but in attempting a double-play he threw the ball away which allowed Guarno to score for the 4-1 advantage.
In the back half of the twin-bill Evan Greusel (2-1) starts against Cardoza Tucker (0-1). Greusel is coming off back-to-back wins after losing his first outing. Tucker makes his third start and in nine innings he has walked ten and struck out eight for a 5.00 earned run average.
The Vipers start a first place showdown against the South Division leading St. George RoadRunners on Monday June 8th at 7:05 PM. On Monday the three-game series begins and it will be the Vipers' Mini-Baseball Keychain Giveaway Night. Reggie Rivard (1-1) will make his second start of the season for Calgary against St. George left-hander Luis Gonzalez (1-2). Rivard is coming off a tough luck loss where he went five innings and gave up only two runs while Gonzalez has made two starts and has a 6.92 E.R.A.
Tuesday June 9th at 7:05 PM MDT Erik Dessau (2-0) makes his third start of the season for the Snakes against Eric Van Slyke (1-0). Dessau has tossed ten and two-third innings this season striking out 11 for a 4.22 earned run average while Van Slyke last year played for Edmonton and has made two starts, throwing a complete game in one of them, posting a 2.70 E.R.A.
On Wednesday June 10th at 7:05 PM MDT the Vipers wrap up this five-games-in-four-days home stand as Hideki Nagasaka (1-0) toes the rubber against Monte Mansfield (0-0). Nagasaka is coming off a no-decision while Mansfield has made two starts, both for no-decisions, and has a 7.45 E.R.A.
