Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers led by two runs with two innings to go but let the game slip out of their hands and were defeated 6-5 by the Orange County Flyers at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. In comeback fashion the Flyers scored two runs in the top of the sixth and the eventual game winning tally in the top of the seventh for the victory. It was the back half of a double-header and also spilt the mini two-game series between the two teams. With the loss the Vipers fall to 10-5 but remain in first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.
Mac Suzuki (0-1) took the loss in allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in his inning and two-thirds. Evan Greusel was in line for his league high third victory of the season after he went five innings and gave up three runs while walking only one and striking out six. Frank James came into the game for Calgary and struck out the only batter he faced. Armadno Carrasco (1-0) picked up the win in striking out both batters he faced in the sixth inning with a runner at first base. At the plate Calgary's Mark Okano collected two runs batted in while Fehlandt Lentini scored two runs, and Ivan Reyes went two-for-three with a RBI. For Orange County Travis Becktel had a monster game going three-for-three with two runs scored and batted in which including scoring the tying run and knocking in the winning run. Shane Buschini made the defensive play of the game as in the bottom of the seventh, with his team up by one, he made a absolute perfect throw to second base to putout Jorge Mejia who was attempting a leadoff double.
Orange County once again opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning as Fernando Pacheco doubled, Damian Jackson singled, and Julian Benavidez grounded out as the Vipers botched a double-play opportunity for a run batted in and the 1-0 advantage.
The Snakes tied the game at one in the bottom of the second as Drew Miller walked, and with two outs both Rick Guarno and Reyes recorded clutch singles to plate Miller.
In the bottom of the third inning Calgary took the lead as Lentini singled, Nelson Castro was hit by a pitch, and Mejia reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Lentini to score as second baseman Nick Guerra threw away the double-play relay. Mejia later came in to score on a Okano clutch two-out RBI base knock for the 3-1 lead.
Right back responded the Flyers in the next half inning as Becktel walked, scored on a Buschini RBI double, and Frank LoNigro knocked in Buschini with a RBI two-base-hit to tie the game at three.
Calgary retook the lead in the top of the fifth frame as Lentini was hit by pitch, Castro singled, and Mejia reached on a fielding error by the shortstop Jackson to load the bases. Okano delivered a sacrifice fly for one run and Clint Johnston picked up his first hit as a Viper to cash another run and the 5-3 advantage.
For the second time in the game Orange County responded right back in the next half inning as Nick Guerra walked, Becktel doubled in a run, Buschini walked, and Steve Boggs came up with a big two-out RBI base knock to tie the game at five.
