Caps Split Before Saturday Night Movie

June 7, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Capitals (8-7) hosted the St. George RoadRunners (11-4) in a very untraditional double-header on Saturday evening, as the Friday night game had to be completed, beginning in the thirteenth inning after being suspended the night before due to city ordinances.

Aaron Hornostaj continued his clutch hitting, driving in Jorge Cortes to win the first game 8-7. Hornostaj had been inserted late in the game as a pinch runner, but again found himself with an opportunity to contribute. Norm Hutchins and Joe Jiannetti hit back-to-back homeruns in the first inning, approximately 24 hours before Cortes scoring the winning run.

Prior to the start of the scheduled Saturday game, as a tribute leading up to A League of Their Own playing as the Saturday Night Movie, original Rockford Peach, Betty Carveth (Dunn) threw out the ceremonial first pitch. A few hundred fans endured the game to watch the movie based on the Peaches.

In the game, the Capitals faced tough pitching from RoadRunners' starter, David Seccombe. For the second straight game, Capitals hitters went back-to-back on homeruns, with Gary Harris and Chad Ehrnsberger providing the long balls, but that would be all the offense that the team produced in an 8-2 loss.

The Capitals will be back in action at Telus Field to wrap up the three-game series with St. George this afternoon. Signature Sunday returns, as kids are encouraged to meet their favourite Caps players in the Birthday Area following the game for autographs. Also following the game will be an early tribute to Father's Day. Dads and their families are invited to play catch on the field.
