Victoria Seals News Release

Chico, CA - Looking to avenge a loss at the hand of the Chico Outlaws on Friday night, the Victoria Seals took to Nettleton Stadium for game two on Saturday. The Outlaws sent Evan White (2-0) on the mound, while the Seals turned to former Seattle Mariners draft pick Austin Bibens-Dirkx (0-1) for the start.

The Seals got out to a good start in the top of the first inning courtesy of a single from lead-off hitter Chris Van Rossum. After Wilver Perez doubled to the wall, Brian Rios picked up Victoria's third hit of the inning to put the visitors out front 1-0. Going right back at it in the second frame, an RBI ground-out from Seals short stop Bret LeVier extended the lead to 2-0 through two innings work.

With Austin Bibens-Dirkx in a grove for the Seals, tying his own team record with nine strikeouts through seven shutout innings, Victoria picked up the offense again in the seventh frame. With Brett Flowers on second base and Bret LeVier on first, an RBI single from Van Rossum gave Victoria one, and Perez lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score LeVier and hand the Seals a 4-0 advantage.

After Victoria got a single from Brian Rios an error to put Josh Arhart on first to start the eighth, a walk to third basemen Carlos Duncan would load the bases and the Seals would stretch their lead to 6-0 on a two-run hit from Brett Flowers. Another RBI ground out from LeVier capped off the scoring for Victoria, putting them up 7-0 through seven and a half innings.

Despite two runs on three straight hits from the Outlaws in the bottom of the eighth frame, Seals' reliever Ethan Katz was able to strike out the side and make way from Graham Campbell in the bottom of the ninth. The Victoria native stepped in to close out the game on just four Chico batters in the final inning, giving the Seals a 7-2 win.

With the Seals' second road win of the 2009 season, Austin Bibens-Dirkx improves his record to 2-0 while the Outlaws' starter, Evan White, takes his first loss of the year. Brett Flowers led the way at the dish for Victoria, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI's while Brian Rios was 4-for-5 with an RBI of his own. Dan Luyben again led the way for the Outlaws, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI in the losing effort.
