St. George Needs Extras to Beat Caps 9-6

EDMONTON, AB - The St. George won its fifth consecutive series to open the GBL season defeating the host Edmonton Capitals 9-6 in 10 innings Sunday afternoon at Telus Field.

St. George won the final two games of the series to move their record to 12-4. Edmonton drops back to .500 at 8-8.

Five solo homers were hit by the RoadRunners off Caps starter Justin Jordan. Angel Sanchez and A.J. Valentine went back-to-back twice in the first and fifth innings. Juan Serrano also went yard with a massive shot to left field in the fourth.

Tied 6-6 after regulation, St. George scored three times off Derrick DePriest (1-1) in the tenth. Valentine led off the inning with a single to right. Yosvany Almario laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Valentine to second and Cody Nowlin drew an intentional walk. Serrano lined a hard grounder that glanced off the shortstop's glove into left field scoring Valentine. Jose Rodriguez brought home the final two runs with a liner to right.

Bartolome Fortunato, staked to a three-run lead, struck out one and rolled up a double play to notch his third save backing up two perfect frames thrown by winning pitcher Eude Brito (2-0).

Valentine led all St. George hitters with three safeties while the team finished with 12 hits overall. John Pasieka and Chad Ehrnberger had two hits apiece for Edmonton.

The RoadRunners continue their Canadian road trip Monday night in Calgary against the Northern Division leading Vipers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm Mountain with LHP Luis Gonzalez (1-2) on the hill for St. George and RHP Reggie Rivard (1-1) taking the bump for Calgary.
