Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino, recovering from a strained left abdominal muscle sustained on July 27, will begin a Major League rehab assignment when the Lehigh Valley IronPigs host the Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday at Coca-Cola Park, the Phillies officially announced today. The length of the rehab is unknown but Victorino is eligible to return to the Phillies from the D.L. this weekend. Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network is the exclusive sponsor of all Major League rehabilitation appearances at Coca-Cola Park.
Tickets still remain for Tuesday's 7:05 p.m. game and can be purchased in-person at Coca-Cola Park, by calling (610) 841-PIGS or online at ironpigsbaseball.com. Prices for single-game tickets start as low as $6 for General Admission, granting fans access to the Capital BlueCross Lawn seating area and standing room only areas. Field Level reserved seats are just $9.
Tuesday's game always features a Commemorative Cup giveaway for the 3,000 fans 18 and older, courtesy of Coca-Cola.
Victorino was hitting .250 with 15 home runs and 53 RBIs along with a league-leading eight triples, prior to the last month's setback. The injury occurred while he was diving back to first base in the sixth inning of a 9-5 victory over Arizona at Citizens Bank Park.
Victorino's 2008 postseason heroics that featured an epic grand slam off Milwaukee's ace CC Sabathia in Game 2 of the NLDS helped propel the Phillies to their first World Championship since 1980. The unforgettable grand slam was the first such hit in Phillies playoff history. A round later in the NLCS, the Hawaii native clubbed a game-tying home run in the 8th inning of Game 4 against the Dodgers. In all, Victorino accumualted a franchise-record 13 RBI in the postseason.
Last season, Victorino became just the 4th Hawaiian-born player - and first position player - to make an All-Star team, joining Ron Darling, Charlie Hough and Sid Fernandez. The ultra-productive season saw Victorino rank among the elite in the National League in various categories, including triples (1st, 13), at-bats (4th, 620), multi-hit games (6th, 53), runs (7th, 102), hits (8th, 181) and doubles (T-9th, 39).
Victorino was originally selected by the Dodgers in the 6th round of the 1999 draft. He was chosen by San Diego in the annual Rule 5 draft in 2002 and made his Major League debut with the Padres in 2003. The Phillies acquired the 26-year-old from San Diege in the Rule 5 draft on Dec.13, 2004.
Since joining the Phillies, Victorino has hit .279 with 59 home runs, 277 RBI and 129 stolen bases while also being named a 2009 National League All-Star and two-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner (2008-09).
Tuesday will mark the second time that Victorino will have appeared in an IronPigs uniform as he went 3-for-8 in a pair of games (April 26-27) at Coca-Cola Park in 2008 while recovering from a calf strain. No stranger to the International League, Victorino was the 2005 I.L. Player of the Year when he led the circuit in triples (16) and finished second in runs scored (93) while hitting .310 for the Scranton-Wilkes/Barre Red Barons.
