San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - Kurt Drummond scored two power-play goals in the second period and netminder David Currie stopped 29 shots, leading the Victoria Salmon Kings to a 4-2 win over the San Diego Gulls Wednesday night at the ipayOne Center.
San Diego (5-7-2) drops its second straight after going unbeaten in its previous seven games and remains tied for third in the Pacific Division. Victoria (6-9-1) remains fifth in the West Division, but now trails the fourth-place Las Vegas Wranglers by two points.
The Salmon Kings opened a 1-0 lead 9:26 into the first period on Dustan Heintz's third goal of the season. It came on a fortunate bounce for Victoria, as Heintz picked up a loose puck behind the goal line and centered a pass that banked into the net off San Diego defenseman Jonathon Shockey's skate.
Drummond scored back-to-back power-play goals in the second period, extending Victoria's lead to 3-0. His first came at the 7:22 mark when he redirected Steve Lingren's point shot past Gulls goaltender Tyler Weiman. His second tally came at 12:05 when he beat a screened Weiman from the left circle.
It was Drummond's second and third goals of the year, both coming with San Diego's Steve Hildenbrand in the penalty box. Prior to his first power-play marker, the Gulls had killed 29 straight penalties.
The Gulls found their offense in the third period and made it a 3-2 game with two power-play goals 1:11 apart. Guillaume Fournier extended his point streak to eight games at the 14:25 mark when he put a rebound past Currie. Dan DaSilva, who was assigned by the American Hockey League's Lowell Lock Monsters, drew the Gulls within one at 15:36, beating Currie from the slot.
Adam Taylor answered for the Salmon Kings at 17:10 of third, putting the nail in the coffin. Taylor and Jade Galbraith rushed into the San Diego zone two-on-one and Taylor eventually tipped home Galbraith's feed for his fourth marker of the season.
Notes: Wednesday marked the Gulls' 400th all-time home game, dating back to 1995. San Diego is 308-70-22 all-time on home ice... Weiman stopped Adam Taylor on a penalty shot 1:13 into the third period. It was the second penalty shot he's stopped this season... Fournier has 11 points during his eight-game point streak (5g, 6a)... Jesse Bennefield was activated from the injured list... Doug MacIver is on the seven-day injured list with a knee sprain... Alex Kim and Jason Reimers were signed Monday...
