Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Jose Vargas hit two homeruns and Kyle Teague allowed one run during six innings of work to pick up his first professional win as the Beach Bums downed the Lake Erie Crushers 3-2 on Saturday night.
Traverse City struck early as with two out in the bottom of the first, Vargas took the first pitch he saw from Dave Middendorf over the leftfield wall for his fifth homerun of the season and a 1-0 Beach Bums lead. Chase Burch kept the inning going with a double and came in to score on a Carlo Testa single to push the lead to 2-0.
In the second, the Crushers notched their first tally of the game as Max Casper hit a sac fly to center, scoring Daniel Bowman who singled to lead off the inning.
The Beach Bums upped the lead in the sixth as Vargas struck again, this time going to the opposite way off Middendorf for his sixth long ball of the year and a 3-1 TC edge. The run proved critical as in the eighth, Lake Erie early tied the game. Russell Moldenhauer singled with one out and Daniel Bowman tripled past the dive of D'Marcus Ingram in left-center. With the lead cut to a run, Emmanuel Quiles hit a shallow fly ball to right. Testa loaded up and uncorked a strike to the plate only to see Bowman cross with what appeared to be the tying run. Traverse City appealed the play, however, as Chris Cowell threw the ball back to third base where it was ruled that Bowman left the bag too early when tagging up, ending the inning.
Pitching was the other side of the story in the game as both starters turned in solid performances. Teague (1-0) went six innings allowing one run in his first professional start. The rookie right-hander struck out six in the contest. Nick Capito recorded his fifth save of the season, pitching the final two innings. Middendorf (5-3) took the tough luck loss, going the distance for the Crushers, striking out eight along the way.
The series wraps up on Sunday with a Family FUNday Sunday presented by Central United Methodist Church, The French Manor Senior Living and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan beginning at 5:05 pm Kids tickets are half price with the purchase of an adult chairback seat, there is a full team autograph session and poster giveaway following the game and kids ages 5-12 can run the bases following the contest. There will also be an appearance Sunday by the Air Force Battlefield Airman Tour showcasing the US Air Force Special Operations Community.
