Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (15-22) vs. SCHAUMBURG BOOMERS (22-16)

Saturday, June 29 - 6:05 p.m. CT Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #38 - Home Game #20 (15-22), (9-10)

RHP #14 Brett Zawacki (2-3, 4.42 ERA) vs. LHP #24 Danny Jimenez (1-4, 4.31 ERA)

Last time out...

Evan Anundsen struck out 10 batters in six and a third innings as the Joliet Slammers knocked off the Schaumburg Boomers by a final score of 7-4 Friday night at Silver Cross Field. The Slammers got on the board early with three runs in the first inning. Marquis Riley got things started with an infield single. Then with two on, Nick Akins hit a sharp grounder to third that went through the legs of Frank Pfister, scoring Riley. Another walk loaded the bases and another Schaumburg error allowed Yakubik to score. Then with two away and the bases still loaded, Ben Hewett drew a walk to make it 3-0. Schaumburg scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth and Yakubik crushed his first home run of the year, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the frame to put the Slammers up 5-1. They added another run in the fifth and one more in the sixth. A late rally from Schaumburg fell short as Justin Erasmus got the save.

For Starters...

Brett Zawacki is coming off a strong outing against the Gateway Grizzlies on June 23 as he went six and two thirds innings, giving up only three runs in a 7-3 Joliet victory. Zawacki brings a history of success in affiliated baseball to the Slammers. The right-hander advanced as high as Double-A in the Cardinals organization. St. Louis made Zawacki their 12th round selection out of LaSalle-Peru Township High School in 2007. Last season was Zawacki's first year in the Frontier League.

Home sweet home...

Manager Mike Breyman has said his goal is to get back to .500 by the All-Star Break. Well with a win tonight the Slammers can get back to .500 at home as they are 9-10 at Silver Cross Field. A win would also match their longest home winning streak of the year at three.

Yak...

Jerod Yakubik's home run last night was his first of the season and only the sixth of his professional career. Yakubik is currently in his fourth season of professional baseball.

Akins is on fire...

Nick Akins has hit safely in five consecutive games, but even more impressively he has four home runs in that span. It all started with a grand slam on Sunday, then he hit two more home runs on Tuesday and another in game one of Thursday's double header. Akins was 8-12 in the most recent series against Rockford and leads the team in homers with five.

Not so comeback kids...

The Slammers have not come back from a deficit of more than three runs to win a game this season. However they have also not surrendered a lead of more than three runs.

Winging it...

Michael Wing is tied with Marquis Riley for the team lead with 10 multi-hit games. Wing is tops on the team with 22 RBI.

Holding on...

The Slammers have posted an impressive 13-2 record when leading after six innings this season. However they are 2-20 when tied or trailing after six.

High five!

The Slammers are 12-2 when they score five or more runs. They are 3-20 when scoring less than five.

Hits matter...

The Slammers are 11-2 when they out-hit the opponent. But they are 3-20 when they get out-hit.

They gone!!

Slammers' pitching has struck out 286 batters so far this season; second most in the Frontier League. They have matched their franchise record for K's in one game (14) five times this season. They only struck out 14 batters in a game once before this year and that was in extras innings last season against the London Rippers.
