Vargas Named to USL's Team of the Week
May 17, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh Riverhounds goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas was named to the USL's Team of the Week after a solid performance on the road against FC Cincinnati. Making his USL debut in front of a USL-record crowd of 23,375 at Nippert Stadium, Vargas stood tall, stopping eight of nine shots faced in a 0-1 defeat.
A native of Alajuela, Costa Rica, Vargas made several highlight worthy saves throughout the match. The second half saw him defend two sure goals. First, in the 50th minute, he stopped a Sean Okoli laser headed for the upper-right corner of the net with a diving save. Then shortly after, in the 56th minute, the Hounds keeper dove to keep an Andrew Wiedeman shot from finding the back of the net. The latter save was particularly impressive, as Wiedeman's shot found its way through several bodies in the box before reaching Vargas.
The lone tally for Cincinnati even took considerable effort, as Jimmy McLaughlin netted the goal in all alone only after Vargas had made a stellar initial save on the Pennsylvania native. The eight saves for the Hounds keeper was not only a team season high, but also the most by any Hounds keeper in the past three years.
Prior to joining the Riverhounds this season, Vargas played for F.C. Wichita in the club's inaugural season in the National Premier Soccer League, helping the Kansas squad to a conference title. Vargas also boasts an impressive international resume, competing for the U-17 and U-20 Costa Rica World Cup squads in 2009 and 2011, respectively.
Vargas along with the rest of the Hounds (0-4-3) look to keep busy this week with two games at home. Lansdowne Bhoys FC comes to town on Wednesday, May 18, for round 2 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, while Toronto F.C. II (2-4-2) makes an appearance on Saturday, May 21. Kickoff for both matches is set for 7 p.m.
