VANCOUVER, B.C. - Matt Newman went 3-for-4 with three RBI as the Vancouver Canadians salvaged the final game of a five game series from the Boise Hawks, winning this afternoon, 5-1, before 5,157 fans at Nat Bailey Stadium.

With the win, the Canadians keep pace with the Eugene Emeralds atop the West Division standings with five games left in the regular season.

Boise took an early 1-0 lead in the third against starter Roberto Osuna on a Stephen Bruno sacrifice fly, but Art Charles tied the game in the fourth with a long solo homer.

The C's took the lead for good in the fifth, as Balbino Fuenmayor lined an RBI single to center to plate Kellen Sweeney. After a walk to Charles, Newman doubled home the pair to push the lead to 4-1. Newman added a solo homer in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Javier Avendano was outstanding out of the pen for Vancouver, fanning seven in five shutout innings to pick up his sixth win. Trey Martin and Jeimer Candelario each had two hits in the loss for the Hawks.

Boise will have an off day on Monday before returning home to meet Everett in the first of a five-game series on Tuesday night, with Pierce Johnson meeting Scott DeCecco at 6:45 p.m.

NOTES - Stephen Bruno extended his hit streak to 17 games with a first inning single, but Willson Contereas went 0-for-3, ending his hit streak at 16...Vancouver hit seven homers in the series, the Hawks hit zero.
